Off shoot of someone elses thread for the Rob..

Need to start looking to scope a Rem SPS .257 Weatherby. Will mainly be used for a long range (low round count) varmint gun.

And will occasionally see use chasing antelope. Tempted to go the CDS route on a Leupold, but I'm open to all suggestions.

I would first look at the style of hunting. If you are walking or setting, look at a 4.5x14. If you are stand hunting or on a varmint bench look at a 6.5x20. The 257 Wby really shines at long range and you need a scope that is matched to its capabilities.

Years ago I came up with a 8 x 32 AO burris signature scope. I have it on my roy. Works great as I don't shoot anything with it under 100 yds. Especially if I want to eat it.

I've been mainly thinking about a VX-3 4.5-14 LR and than sending it in for CDS turret(s).

Can't really swing for an LPS, was thinking about the Long Range model (30mm with side focus).

I've found a few placed to get them for 600.00, send it in for the extra turret or two and call it good. Spendy, but I love the alluma caps also.

A VX-III or better will suffice...

I have a Leupold 4x12 on both of mine, and unless you shoot at night (which the law doesn't recommend !) the clarity and brightness is outstanding.

I've had Loopy 6.5x20 down to 2.5x8s on various 257wbys. I prefer the 4.5x14. Currently I have the VXIII LR with the B&C reticle on a mark V Ultra lightweight. I like it allot. I have found that for the most part if I can't see it well enough to shoot it on 14 power, there is too much mirage to see it to shoot it @ 20 or 25 power. The B&C reticle is a great deal more usefull than I thought it would be. With just a little practice I found the range that each mark worked for with my normal zero and it did help me kill a skunk just past 400 yards. I still prefer to make the adjusment with the elevation knob so the B&C may be available!

I scoped my .257 Wby Accumark with a 6 X 24 Burris Signature that my grandson swares that you can count the fleas on a Bucks balls at 100 yards. It also shoots one holers when the shooter does his part. Good shooting.

I don't know about fleas at 100yds, but with the 6.5-20x44 Scope on my 223 bolt action varmint rig I can tell the difference between remington, federal or winchester 20ga hulls viewing the bottoms at 100yds.

At this point I'm leaning towards a VX-3
4.5-14 LR and than have CDS turrets installed.

Don't see anything wrong w/ that set-up.

But, think I'd try a mil-dot variable having a miniumum of 4 to 6x on the low end.

I don't think you can go wrong with a 4.5-14 scope.

Regarding your Remington, you may wish to see my post on "Your favorite loads" forum.
