Has anyone rechambered a M70 classic to 7x57?

Just curious which caliber would it be rechambered from? I believe the 7-08 would have to be set back. May as well just start with a new barrel.

I can see the appeal of the 7x57 but if I were using a long action I think I would go 280. That is unless you have to have a long action for the 7x57 as I don't know.

A long action for the 7x57 allows the heavier bullets to be seated out for max case volume and performance is enhanced. A short action would handicap this great cartridge.

Then forget what I said. Go for it.

I own a 280 and 7x57 both long actions. Unless you are doing a lot of shooting with the heavy bullets the 7x57 gives up very little to the 280. Even then with the 175 loaded long and modern pressure it is probably less than 100fps.

Agreed!I have the same cals both Rugers.Of the two I just prefer the 7x57.

My wife shoots a Brno 7 x 57 for deer, her backup in case something should happen to her beloved Brno is a Mdl 70 featherweight 7 x 57. Don't even suggest doing anything to her rifles or using another caliber. So far the Mdl 70 just waits like handmaiden for its day. Lovely gun, wish it were mine.

I had aM70 7x57 and my findings were:

For 140gn around 3000mv it was fine.

However if I was planning to use the likes of 175gn bullets at decent speed , I would utilize the long action with 280rem.
I rather have 140NP and 175NP loaded to the same ordinary length of 3.30" on a std. throat 280rem [with the longer bullets absorbed into the case], than 7x57 long throated for the heavy long bullets.
ie; id rather a .3"longer case body than a throat extended by .3"

the 'powderhorn" in san antonio tx has a pushfeed m70 in 7x57.... about a 90% gun, its a "lightweight" and missing sights.... other than i'd like to own it, i have no financial interest in the gun... if you buy it tell 'em jim sent ya...

A couple of years ago I bought a 7X57mm in a Rem. M-700 mountain rifle at a pawn shop in San Antonio. The rifle has some wear marks and initially wouldn't group more than two rounds in the thin coach-whip barrel. Then I started tinkering with some slower powders. With RL-19 I am now getting high 2600s to 2700 fps. with 150 grain bullets and it will fairly consistantly shoot under 1 moa at 200 yards.

As much as I dis-like the Rem. M-700, I simply love this rifle. It is short, light and thin, and simply a joy to handle and shoot. With scope, sling, scope, butt-stock cartridge holder with 9 rounds there and 4 in the well, it weighs an even 8 pounds.
I will be putting another trigger on it to prevent "ADL".
