Ulrik,

There is more that one right answer to your demands. I would ask if you can own any number of rifles in Norway as there are limits in some countries. If price is not a limit and you can own many then order more than one!

My first choice would be a Kimber 8400 Montana. In fact I have one on order and expect it soon. This is not an expensive rifle for all that you get.

There are a few topics here on how the Kimber 8400's shoot with wood stocks. While djpaintles has not been on as of late he has quite a bit of experiance with these rifles.

My second choice would be a Winchester M70 SS Classic. When I got it I would change what needed to be changed, if anything, by exception. I have one in 7mm WSM and the factory stock at that time was just injected molded and not worth an effort. It's getting a Bansner UL stock now. This rifle has been quite a shooter.

I am looking for a new small bore rifle.
I want the most accurate gun possible.
Caliber is chosen at 270 WSM and I want a stainless steel action+ barrel and a Synthetic (preferably McMillan) or laminate stock.
I do not want a push feed action -preferably a CRF action.
Prize is not an issue.
What should I go for ?? Is there any factory rifle good enough on the market ?? What about the Winchester All-wheather model from their custom shop ??

Ulrik Hentzer,
Depending on the intended use, take a look at the new Kimber M8400 Montana. It is a light weight hunting rifle, not a heavy barreled target rifle.

My Dad has a Winchester M70 Classic with laminate stock that will shoot 140 grain Barnes TSXs, 150 grain Hornadys, and 90 grain Sierras into an inch or so. It meets all of your criteria and is plenty accurate for hunting. The all weather version you refer to might do the trick. Of course the Kimber is a bit "nicer." Ruger and Savage also chamber in the WSMs, as does Blaser.

Don't think any one is going to have a McMillian stock on a factory rifle. I'd look at the Tikka T3 Lite got one in a 300wsm came with rings lapped them before puting scope and and groups(3 shots) are about 3/4" at 100 yds not too bad for a rifle that weights 6.6 lbs. Saw a Kimber 270wsm about 3 wks ago at our range and groups were about 1 1/2" kind of made me look elsewhere. Sako has a pretty nice SS rifle out for the wsm family. Not sure if howa makes a wsm in ss but does have a pretty nice laminated stock on the blued ones I looked at. Well good luck.

Ulrik-there is another way to skin this cat and may be worth a thought or two.

Instead of going Kimber Montana (which isn't out yet and so is unproven) and also instead of going to Win custom shop.

I'd be for getting a M70 action and having a good smith put on a good tube, put on a good handle and tune the trigger and bed it.

Just my thoughts but you could build one heck of a rifle for a bit more than what a Kimber/Montana would cost and for most likely a bit less than a Win custom.

And if you used the right components and right gun Dr. then you should have a rifle that is capable of really fine accuracy.

Just my thoughts...

Have a super day

Mark - I agree with you. I have given it some thought too. But I just wanted to know if there was any factory rifle out there which was good enough as it is.Only problem with gunsmiths is that it takes one hell of a time from ordering the rifle until you get it...
And what about the Ruger action ? I actually really like the Ruger action, it is solid and reliable. It is cheap yes, but what if you polish it a bit and replace the trigger - then I think it would be OK for an accurate working rifle.. (if as you say a good gunsmith puts on a very good barrel, bed it etc etc)

What is your opinion of the Ruger action ?

Ulrik-personally I like and have a ton of rspect for the 77 action. If that is what you'd like then I'd say go for it.

My first time having a smith rebarrel a gun was a old 77 of mine that I had a fella from Helena (montana) put on a Hart 25/06 tube and it shoots like a house a fire.

Personally I'd go this way long b4 buying a new rifle. But that is just me and what trips my hammer.

Good luck

Ulrik, if you should decide to go the (semi) custom route, were you going to have the work done in Norway or in the States (or elsewhere)??

If you were going to do this (as I have done) as a long-range (US) project, get somebody to take care of your entire project for you - and forget about the custom shops from either Remington or Winchester. They are a far cry from what you want. You'll need somebody who is willing to work with you on a personal level to come up with a rifle that will meet your expectations. Somebody who will communicate with you while the project is running, and who will test and stand by the product once it is coming to an end.

Given what you are looking for, I'd look hard at the guys at Serengeti Rifles. They primarily use MRC M1999 actions in their rifles - a much better choice than a stock M70, at least in terms of chances of getting a dimensionally sound action. Larry is GREAT at communicating with customers, and Rod has put some amazingly accurate rifles together based on MRC components. Their stocks are a bunch prettier than regular laminated stocks - if that matters to you?

Good luck whichever road you decide to take.

Might want to look at one of Ed Brown (573) 565-3261 rifles price about $3000. since price is not an issue. Had nice article in July rifleman about his rifles. When you start worrying if a factory rifle is good enought better make the jump over to a custom.

Ulrik,

As stated if you want a McMillan stock you are going to have to get it as an after market item. Right now the most accurate out of the box rifles(doesn't matter what caliber) is Savage. I bought a .270 WSM in a Savage M10(not stainless but I would nave stainless - personal thing) and it started out shooting just over 1/2" groups and only got better after doing some load work. Just think with the money you would save you could buy the McMillan stock and be ahead of the game. Lawdog

enough already with the Savages. He said he wanted crf and didn't really care what it cost. Not a likely Savage owner.
