Hi all

Just was able to shoot my Ruger compact .260 on tuesday. It shot OK I suppose. Not as good as I like but I am sure it was a lot more ME not doing well than the gun. Remember when you look at the velocities below that the barrel is only 16.5 inches. Really short.

Can anyone put me on a ballistics table that will give me the 100 yard point of impact for a dead on impact for 225 yards?

I was shooting some Rem. 140 gr. cor lokt. and some 120 grain NBT.

I kept 2 of each lot and went to a local reloader (alabama ammo inc. ). He shot 2 of each lot thru his chronograph and the results were

140 gr.

1. 2319 fps
2. 2345 fps

avg 2332
spread 26 fps
stdeva 18.38

120 gr.

1. 2514
2. 2463

avg 2488
spread 51
stdeva 36

I have ordered some 100 grain NBT's and bought a box of 129 gr. SST's.

Alabama Ammo will do short runs of any bullet that I want for a decent price so I am trying to find out the one the rifle likes best.

Unless you have the ability to field test this information I would take it for what it is worth (free advice over the internet).

Using my ballistic calculator program I got the following information which is likely to be close or maybe not depending on how well a math program in a computer truly simulates your bullet and the BC is correct etc, ect, etc..

140 Rem Corelockt
25 0.55, 50 2.19, 75 3.38, 100, 4.12, 125 4.37, 150 4.11, 175 3.31, 200 1.94, 225 0.0

140 Rem 2332 fps 100 yd +4.12 for 225 at 0.0

120 NBT
25 0.27, 50 1.67, 75 2.70, 100 3.33, 125 3.56, 150 3.35, 175 2.71, 200 1.60, 225 0.0

120 NBT 2488 fps 100 yd +3.33 for 225 at 0.0

This assumes scope is 1.5 inches above the bore.

I still say I would field test at some of the distances in the table before depending on it and realizing bullet dispersion is likely to be some multiple of that distance and so will increse this total number to some UNKNOWN degree!

Math in the calculator will get one a good idea, then one needs to field test to prove how accurate some of the calctions (estimates and assumptions (WAGS and SWAGS)) were.

Jim B., Here's a site w/ a good ballistics calculator program (http://www.handloads.com/calc/index.html). I'd read when it first came out that the factory 260 Rem ammo lost a lot of velocity in a short barrel. Looks like that's still true... Should be able to easily/safely get a couple hundrd fps more velocity w/ judicious handloading. Gary T.

I use 44 grains of H414 with 120 Sierra's. It shoot under an inch and chronographs at 2850.
I use a Remington 700 Mountain rifle with a 22 inch barrel.
