H380 is too slow a powder for the 223. Hodgdon doesn't even show that as a possible combinatio0n on their web site.

I don't know if H380 has changed over the years or whether Hodgdon has seen problems with it in some of the cartridges when they did their testing but my older Hodgdon manual (#25) lists 26.0 to 28.0 grain charges for the 60 grain to 63 grain bullets. If you decide to use that data watch for any signs of erratic results and, of course, any signs of excessive pressures. Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

The 223 has always worked best with H-335, H322 and IMR-4198, but todays powder situation we sometimes have to live with whats available. I would bet you can load up 26 grs. of H-380 and get good accuracy... I have heard and read about H380s problems, but I'm inclined to think its "eraticness" is "eratic behavior by the loader"..I have used H380 over the years on many calibers without any problems, and it gets some of the highest velocity in many calibers..but it can really jump pressure "in a hurry" if you go over the top, more so than most powders I think, and I suspect that's the rumor of "eratic behavior" explained. Cut back a couple of grains from the book max load and you won't have any problems, and you won't lose much velicity, and may pick up on accuracy. A very old Hodgdon manual, 1979, lists starting load of 26 gr., 2,710 fps, 30,000 CUP with the 60 gr. bullet. Max. load is 28 gr, 2,983 fps, 38,400 CUP. You get good velocity with relatively low pressure. Might not work so well if using in a gas gun. This load would be great in a bolt gun and perhaps give excellent accuracy. Hodgdon claims to have first used it in a 22-250 and got consistent 3/8 inch groups. Thus, named the powder H380. Shooter

Been shooting 60 grainers for years with 27gr H380. Lethal on deer and pigs.

I thought they named it H380 because a very accurate load for many 22-250 rifles was 38.0 grains. Soon as my brass is empty I will try some H380 in my bolt gun 223. Need to use up some small rifle primers.

Try some RL 7(If you can find any) with 55gr.Sierra bullets, you'll be glad you did. My 700 sporter likes 21.5gr.Rem.cases, 7.5 Rem primers. Shoots one hole groups. Stepchild NRA Life Member

Have used h-380 in the .223 with bullets from 60 grain to 75 grain with good results. The max. load used for all was 24.5 grains. For some reason I didn't record wither it was sooty or not. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age!
