Well I loaned a rifle to some fellas that wanted to get into some long range coyote action a couple of years ago and never heard much about it since then. One thing led to another and I retrieved my Sako 243 bofors steel L579. Had this rifle for a fews years but never got around to working up a load for it till yesterday. Trying work with Win 760 powder as I have quite a bit of it. Heading to the range with 15 rounds to see about making some nice tight groups. FS

I recently worked up some .243 loads with NBT 70g and W760. I'm shooting them out of a Rem CDL 700 24" tube and getting 3700+ fps. I put those together to have for some long range coyote popping. I've used some 55g NBT for some rock chuck hunting with the .243 and got 4050fps out of that load. PM me and I'll give you the formulas.

Interesting you should talk about an L579 Sako. I am getting ready to drag the one I have over to the local smith to have the crown checked. Here's the story on this one, which has turned into a head scrather. I acquired a barreled action with rings from a police trade in back in the early 90's. It seems, and this is rather gross, although interesting some guy stuck the barrel in his mouth and pulled the trigger. When he hit the floor, the stock broke, hence me getting a barreled action. We don't know what happened to the scope, disappeared in the evidence room I guess. I stocked it with a Richards Stock, and went to work up loads. Got a couple that would group around.75 and called it good. Shot it until about 2005, when we looked down the bore with a borescope, and found the bore pretty rough, we guessed because of the blood that was left in during the investigation. At that point my kids rebarreled it for me as a Christmas present. The barrel they had put on it was a Douglas, and I couldn't wait to get tot the range. It threw them all over the target so to speak, not as good as the rough Sako barrel. I went back to the smith and pitched a real bitch, and he rebarreled it with a Shilen, with pretty much the same results. We checked the float, bedding etc, and it still always throws a flyer. I really miss my 243, so after all this time, if the crown dosen't save it, I am going to send the action up to Pac-Nor, and have it rebarreled. Long but a sorry story. Any thoughts Jerry NRA Benefactor Life Member

The common link with your 2 bad barrels is the gunsmith. There was an episode discussed here where a guy got what was claimed to be a high dollar barrel installed and it appeared the smith took a short cut to a cheaper blank. I would be concerned about your smiths chambering skills if he messes up 2 in a row. Since the .243 has such a short neck someone may be able to set the barrel back the length of the neck and re-chamber it.

Not to hijack Fasteel's thread, but I took the rifle over to our local, different gunsmith, and he checked it out. As it turns out, he didn't want to recrown the barrel, as he believes the chamber was cut too short, and a little rough in the shoulder. Maybe the first guy just stuck the barrel on the action,??? He reamed it to min. specs and gave it back to me. We'll see if that changes anything. Jerry NRA Benefactor Life Member

Well I must say that I am impressed with Win 760 powder and my Sako 243. I used 70gr Sierra Matchking bullets with 210 primers and new Win brass. Scope is a Elite 4200 4-16x40 Started my loads at 45.5gr and worked up to 47.3gr and all 5 groups with 3 shots each worked out great. Of the 5 groups, 3 of them I had the first 2 shots in one hole, only 1 time could I get the 3rd shot touching the others. I think I need to just lighten the trigger pull a little and I could be a touch better. 46,46.5&47gr all had the first 2 shots in 1 hole.. FS
