I just counted the first page topics and thirteen of them are about 257 caliber and 264 caliber issues.

It's plain to see that this is where the interest is. And it's so justified. In my 45 years of big game hunting I've come to respect these calibers as the finest for deer and antelope and game under 400 pounds.

I'm amazed that Remington hasn't commercialized the 6.5-06!

Vapo I know what you are talking about. I am responsible for a couple of those posts!
A year ago I got a couple of 6.5x55's one in a M96 sporterized and one a Husky sporter that had been an 8x57 and converted with an M39 barrel on it to 6.5. I am re-barreling the Husky to .257 Roberts, a cartridge I have admired since I was just a kid and wanted one just as long. 8 years ago I bought a .257 in a Ruger Ultra Light for my gal but it is her rifle so I need one myself! I've been doing a little work on the M96 6.5 like a speedlock, cock on opening kit, Timney trigger, bed the cheapo Ramline stock and this gun turns in tiny groups with the 140 grain handloaded Rem Core Lokts. I must say in my experience I am very impressed with the versatility and authority of these two little performers ( 6.5x55 and the .257 Roberts ).
No wonder they command the Lions share of the posts on this small rifle forum!
I think both of these are under appreciated and under rated by so many folks that have never used them, give these rounds a little credit.

Yup. These calibers just work. It is hard to reason but these calibers seem to perform better then they should. My 257 Roberts is my pet rifle.

Remington's success with the 6.5-08 probably has had something to do with them not jumping into the 6.5mm bore pool again. Of course, some of the 6.5-08s failure to thrive may be directly related to Remington's failure to chamber it in the 700 BDL, but maybe not.

I have assumed Remington's reluctance to bring out a 6.5-06 is because it would kill sales of the 25-06........but I've been wrong before!!!! Smiler

I always wished Remington would offer certain 'non-standard' chamberings as special order. Though I'd probably never be able to retire. lol

I doubt that Remington would chamber for a non-commerical cartridge, as that would be too easy for an attorney to litigate for product liability issues. Also, Remington hasn't chambered for cartridges that they don't sell, such as the 284 and 358 which would probably have been popular in the 700 Classic.

I'd like to see a limited run of 700 LSS MRs in 256 Newton, but then again, I'd like to see a whitetail with a B&C rack over 200 points in the center of my crosshair. I can dream!

I also have contributed one or two posts about 6.5x55s and .260 Rems. 6.5s are fun and addictive. I've had .270s and 25-06s before. Now, I'll just take one of my 6.5s, slow down, and enjoy some backstraps without it being bloodshot.

Per chance, look where where 3 of us 6.5 loonies are from...Nebraska. I'm in Bellevue, 260remguy is practically my next door neighbor and Vapodog is out in the western part of the state. Is it something in the water? Hmmmm.....coincidence or conspiracy...

Your wish has been granted!! Jamison Intl is going to make a run of 256 Newton brass...same-same 6.5-06. Order now, and build a flat-shooting, hard-hitting plains game rifle.

IMHO, hindsight being 20/20, Remington would have been well advised to do the 6.5-06 rather than the 6.5 Rem. Mag. But at the time of its development, belted magnums were the rage. Remington has standardized some wildcats before, but I doubt it will do the 6.5-06 because of the 6.5 Mag.

vapodog when was the last time Remington ever listened to a customer? I think if they had their hand on the pulse that we would have seen several more calibers and rifle styles coming out of big green.
