460, I understand the 240 grainer is stabilized by a 1 in 8 twist, but the "pen" will tumble on impact (for terminal effect), and the 300 whisper is a 221 fireball case opened up to 30

I only know about 300 whisper so.... TC used to make 300 whisper barrels with a 1-10 twist. I heard these would stabilize a 200 grain subsonic bullet. A 1-8 twist barrel as made by SSK (or others?) is required for the 240 grain bullet. The case is made from 221 fireball, but myself and many others just use the 223 cut off at the shoulder, sized/trimmed. Makes a very good case.

You are right for the 300 Whisper you need a 1-8 twist. For 338 Whisper you might check with JD Jones but I think you need the some twist of 1-8 for the 300gr bullets to stabilize

if you email me at sure_shot_99@yahoo.com i should be able to give you both twist rates by then. i have a chart telling the minimum twist rates for pretty much all the calibers up to half inch.

as above - the 300 whisper is 221 necked up. i have had the pleasure of shooting one of these rifles(actually it was a contender pistol) i found iy etremely accurate with factory ammunition. under 1 moa at 100. however its trajectory leaves a bit to be desired for any shots more than 200.

as for the .338 whisper i have never heard of it.

I have a 300 whisper that I have just begun to tinker with. It is fabulous to shoot with practically no recoil and the ballistics are very impressive for a short barrel gun. Mine is a contender barrel with a 10 twist and I don't intend to shoot any of the heavy stuff. I shoot the lighter bullets and intend to use it for deer sized game out to 150 yards. As far as handgun hunting rounds go, I think that I have found what I have been looking for with the whisper. 130 grain bullet at 2100 fps+ out of a 14" barrel. Compares ballistically to the 30-30 in the same length barrel but with much less recoil and muzzle flash. Amazingly efficient little round. I have only used 221 fireball brass thus far and am interested in the advantages in using .223 brass besides the cost.

If you cut it with a rim yo can use .360 DW brass. My .300/.221 is a 10" rimmed version for the Contender pistol by VVCG in a 1:8 twist. Shot it today. My last group with 150 NBTs at 50 yards (I use a 2X scope) was 0.5" with the first 4 in one hole. Sweet!

460,
I have a TC 300 Wh a 10" bbl and it shoots under MOA with Hornady 130gr SSP's and Sierra 135gr SSSP's. Really does damage to the deer though. I cut down 223 cases below the shoulder and neck them down. If you have a large neck dia, this helps close it up a bit.
The 338 Wh is a 221 neck up to 338 and is a straight wall case, almost anyways, when finished, with better ballistics due to the bullets. The only one to produce this, to my knowledge, is JDJ.
Most barrel makers only offer a 1 in 10 twist for the 338. There is one, Pacnor I believe, that makes down to a 7 twist. The major problem I see with this cartridge is the extra expense of the bullets. Other than that, wouldn't mind having one myself.

The .338 Whisper cartridge I have seen was based on a 7mmBR necked up to .338. It had a shoulder. Looked like a stunted 338-06. MM

I was looking at JDJ's site. They make the .338Whisper on the 7mmBR case, and the .338Whisper #2 on the .221FB case. MM

I have a SSK 300 Whisper, with a 1:8 twist. I've been thinking about the .338 Whisper for the longest time, and JD told me its a 1:7 twist.

Hello.
Thanks for the response.
Is the SSK Industries the unly ones that have reamers for this Whisper's, or have anybody seen any other supplier that have them?

I think that you'll find that most of the aftermarket contender barrel suppliers have a .300 whisper reamer - only they can't call it a .300 whisper since that name is protected. They are called .300-.221 which is essentially the same thing. My barrel is marked as a .300-.221 and was made by Bullberry but was not intended for the long subsonic bullets. My twist is a 10 or 12" twist and I only intend to use it with the 150 grain and less bullet weights. I also know that Virgin Valley has the reamer.

I have just added something to my site about the .300 whisper that i have and love. I really like this caliber for a hunting handgun.

You guys just make sure you use handgun rated(soft) bullets that will expand well on game. I think the 150 grain ballistic-tip is perfect as it also helps flatten out trajectory.
