I have a customer who wants me to suggest a 223 for him. He has specified a detachable box mag and open sights. Prefers wood but may be flexable on this. Doesn't like the Browning A-bolt mag. I've thought of the CZ lux and possibly a Savage though not sure if tey have one with the detach mag. Any other suggestions or opionions on the Lux? Thanks...

Ernie, I have a CZ527 American in 223 and, while it is a fantastically accurate rifle using handloads, the one thing I don't like about it is the BLOODY BOX MAGAZINE!!!!! You can't reload it without removing it from the rifle, and in a hurry, guess what! You have to sssllllliiiiddeee the cartridges in from the front of the box (assuming it hasn't already been dropped in the dirt in the excitemement of the moment), then find the hole in the stock to reinsert the magazine (read LOUD CLICK), and then start shooting. I LOVE the 527 action, but if they could supply an integral box mag that could be reloaded from the top of the action, i'd GIVE the 527 away. my two cents worth!! Also an integral box with floor plate can be cleaned - a removable box is a bitch to clean!

Detachable magazines for this rifle are a dime a dozen, in anywhere from 5 to 30 round capacities.

Its sights are some of the best out there, period.

1 MOA or less in accuracy with premium ammo.

Excellent, crisp trigger.

I agree with ORION, what more can you ask for. If you think that rifle isn't capable of fine accuracy, go to high power match and watch through a spotting scope when they are shooting porne from the 600 yard line. Accuracy off the bench at 100 in the .5 MOA range or possibly less with a good load. Trust me you will be shocked how a good high power shooter can make that rifle perform, I was.

I like detachable box mags. myself, so if he has to have a bolt action. Get an old 788 Rem. have it rebarreled and chambered to 223. My old 788 (originally a 222 Rem.) has a stainless steel # 3 tapper Douglas 1 in 9 twist. It shoots the 50 and 55 gr. BlitzKings, 60 gr. Sierra Varminter, 69 gr. MatchKing, and the 75 gr. AMax under .5 MOA. And yes the 223 will work through the original 222 Rem. magazine.

I just ordered a 24-incher with 1:8 twist the other day. $475 with a few extras and a complete buttstock assembly to go on my existing lower. I like the flexibility of switchable uppers. Your bud will, too.

If only I could...

My CZ 527 is a nice little rifle. I found out it had a hairline split in the stock after I took delivery of it, and I have to say that CZ's warranty service sucks. I can't recommend them for that reason, but then again, how often do you need warranty service on a rifle?

I recently bought a CZ in 22 Hornet. When it came in the mail, the stock had several gouges on the pistol grip. I called CZ, and they said to send it back. It took a little too long to get it back form them, but, rather than replacing the stock, they replaced the whole rifle. Go figure.

I love the look on the faces of my non-competitive shooting friends when they hear that we shoot offhand at 200 yards, get ten shots into a 9" circle at 300 yards in 70 seconds, and shoot all the way from 600 yards. The look gets better when the learn it is done with iron sights, and without any from of artificial support.

To most of those guys, an offhand shot past 50 yards and hitting anything at 600 yards without a scope are inconcievable.

Orion 1:
I know the look you are talking about, I wore it myself, and still do everytime I see good high power shooters in action. Every shooter should see it for themselves, and then decide if they know how to shoot. The smith that builds my rifles is a Distinguished High Master as of this past July. When he was rebarreling my old 788 he mentioned that he shot high power, and being very uneducated about this, I had no clue what he was talking about. He explained it to me, and the distances they shot. I wasn't so sure he wasn't full of shit. Well he invited me to tag along the next weekend to a high power match. Well I did, I was totally in AWE what of they did with an AR 15. Sunday they shot in a 1000 yard match and if I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have believed it some had told me. Kill and elk at 600 yards, hell yes, good high power shooters can do with an good M1 A with battle sights on the first shot. If they haven't seen it they can't comprhend it. My hat is off to you high power shooters. I shoot F class along side them at 600 and 1000 I know what can be done. Thanks to you high power shooters I have learned a LOT in the last 4 years. Hold hard Orion!

Ernie;
Check in Shotgun News or Gun List and look for a Remington Model 788, chambered in .223 Remington!
I had one and now my brother owns it and "will not" part with it for anything! This rifle is exceptionally accurate! Well within .5 MOA!
They can be found for $325.00 - $375.00 price range!

RiverRat, it IS a good feeling to know one is a competent marksman. We are above about 90% of the hunters out there. The guys I call the 100 yard hackers.

It would depend on what your customer wants to do with the rifle. I own a CZ Lux in 223 as well as the HS stocked CZ Varminter. Both are fine little rifles capable of sub moa. I also own a Colt M4 and a RRA 24" Varminter "AR15" type rifles. these are all great guns for different applications. All the above have detachable magazines. For a walk about hunter the little LUX is hard to beat. I bought mine for a Rock Chuck rifle for hunting in an area that requires more climbing than shooting. If you have specific questions about the CZ let me know.
