Now if you could just figure out how to get a scroll knob on the side of the chamber to roll the throat erosion back as you fire it!

Holy shit batman, look at the size of that cartridge. It dwarfs even the 257 Roy, which I thought was huge.
Replace barrel after every 100 shots.. Big Grin

Hey Paul,

When ya gotta wonder if the barrel will last through the load development phase, I'd care!

I guess you could order 2 barrels when you order the gun?

Remember, this is the "manufacturer's rating". Such numbers are infamous for orginating from the imagination of the advertising agent than from actual measured data.

Get a M-03, with several barrels. Then you can have a back up for the field and range. Big Grin

and when you put the new barrel on you'll have to rework loads. so much for money well spent?

thats a good point!.
i heard you should just make it X high at 100yards, say 2" exactly, run the loads through the chrony, take it to 500yards and see how low its hitting. then just keep changing the BC in the ballistics calculator till the drop comes out right. beer

Any of you guys have copies of Precision Shooting Magazine dating back to the 1988-1997 era? If so, look up an article on my old 257 Banshee wildcat. It clocked 4000+fps MV with a Jef Fowler 110gr VLD bullet. I believe Berger still offers this design as does Jef. It's my 1000 yard Rockchuck rifle, in tandem with Leica Geovid laser rangefinder binoculars and a boosted Leupold (18-42X) by the late Dick Thomas of Premier Reticle. Not tooting my own horn I hope, but these speeds and better accuracy were accomplished more than fifteen years ago with a non-belted case.

Just a .257 STW that one I plan on building later this year. Ferguson won.t sell any of his ammo he makes unless you buy a Rifle.
A 100 gr bullet works well in these if set up Right . Kirby Allen smithed alot of this caliber and he uses atleast a 28" barrel to get that Kind of speed. Right around 3950 fps.

Barrel life can be extended with drive band bullets. I have a hot rod .224 with over 2500 shots through it. It used to be a 220 Swift and in 2500 shots (give or take) the throat was not burned anywhere near as much as what we see with 22-250s at 1000 to 1500 shots. I changed it to the wildcat and now have a further 500 or so through it. It still shoots under an inch as it did after rechambering. I did the smithing for a meat business that harvested around 1500 springbuck a year. They used to go through a barrel a season with their 22-250. With HV bullets going 300fps faster, they now squeeze three seasons from the rifle.

A 6mm MachIV I built on a Blackstar barrel about nine years ago is still shooting bugholes after more than 600 shots. 62gr HV at 4200fps. Use the appropriate bullet and resist the urge to shoot it hot.

This 257 sounds like a darn good idea to me for game up to 200lbs out to 500m or so.

Don't mean to highjack the thread....

No question I would like to try your bullets one of these times Gerard but I don't see any load data for a 338-378 Weatherby.. Might you have that data ???

I have a 257 STW built by Weaver Rifles using the same reamer that Fergson uses. I get 4000+ fps with the Barns 100gr TSX. I'm trying to get some of Gerard's HV bullets.

Gerard this round works on much larger game than 200lbs. In my experince it drops large deer like nothing I have ever seen DRT with complete pass throughs. Fergson has taked elk and Bison with his no problem (see link). He also gets 1000 rounds out of a barrel, which is a lot of hunting.

Dr B,
Yes that should be 200Kg live weight.

.366torque,
The longest shot I have taken with it when it was still a 220 Swift, was 435m on a blesbuck (below). In practise, the extra 300fps it has over the Swift will be good for another 70m or so.

That cartridge is misnamed. It should be called the " .250-4000 ".
I suggest wrapping it in a handy little lever action rifle, compleate with rotory magazine and cartridge counter... Should be popular!

All jokes aside, that or the rocket described by Idaho Sharpshooter would be a hoot to strafe rock chucks with! BT

Doesn't Lazzeroni have a 257 in a "beltless" 378 case?

Thank you Gerard, a lot less meat damage than I would have thought.
