I promise to stop with this type of question right after this one. [Big Grin]

Coyotes to BIG bears.

Here are my choices:

250-3000 on 722 action
6.5x57 on 700 action
7x57 on 700 action
8x57 on 700 action
9.3x62 on 70 action

You'd think I was 80% German...

I'll just add the 223 and 308 Blaser bbls to my 3 rifle battery listed on the other post and I am good to go.
Add a 375 H&H Blaser bbl and my 450 No2 double and you have my world wide battery.
Two rifles in each catagory Light, Medium, and Heavy. [Big Grin]
With a 223 thrown in for varmints.

Ok--I'll bite this is too easy

my 6/06 my 270 and my 340-and that is the end of that--I could just take my 340 and would but--I do believe in always having three guns.

My 5 would be:

.22 rf (for small game and pests)

.243 Mauser action (varminting & deer)

.300 H&H Mauser action(most of my big game hunting)

.458 on .404 Jeffrey's case, on a Mauser action, for the big nasties

12 ga Ithaca model 37

I could hunt the world with this battery. My only qualification on these would be they would have to shoot MY handloads. I don't do factory ammunition. Well maybe factory ammo in the Ithaca. If I could have 6 I would throw in a good .50 or .54 Hawken style muzzle loader.

5 ISN'T ENOUGH... [Wink]

Well, shoot, it isn't!
The key word is 'gun', so, I'll have to REALLY narrow it down.

1. .22LR Marlin 81 bolt-action that I recently acquired that belonged to my Dad. I haven't seen it in 43 years, and he's been dead for 28.

2. .44 Magnum Ruger Redhawk 5.5" blued revolver.

3. 12-gauge Remington 870 pump-action shotgun with extra bbls. and accessories.

4. .375 H&H bolt-action rifle, probably the Browning A-Bolt II/BOSS I've been inquiring about lately, because I would be able to hunt ALL game with it and tune it for any load.

5. .223 Bushmaster XM15E2S with several uppers, including a dedicated .22LR and a .50 BMG... [Razz]

Yeah, that'd do.

1. .22LR Marlin 81 bolt-action that I recently acquired that belonged to my Dad. I haven't seen it in 43 years, and he's been dead for 28.

2. 7mm Rem.Mag. Browning BAR MkII Safari/BOSS.

3. .45-70 Marlin in BLACK RIFLE SCOUT trim.

4. .375 H&H bolt-action rifle, probably the Browning A-Bolt II/BOSS I've been inquiring about lately.

9.3 x 62:

Just adding a little humor. So with five, I have to get rid of the other 45???

My wife jokes about each year, what do I do to justify having so many; get my deer and then shoot the carcass once with the other 49?

If I had to limit my safe to only 5, that is like asking me to cut down on the number of children that God already gave me. Can't give away any of them.

I hear you, Seafire. I can hardly imagine looking in my gun safe(s) and seeing only 5 rifles. It is always interesting to see what others choose. I've been catching up on some your threads over in European Big Game Hunting about caliber selection etc. - good stuff.

Let's not talk about how many I have. I was already chastised about bringing up the Brotherhood of Those Who Have Too Many Rifles so I won't mention it ever again. However, I can't see use in NA for more than three:

.22 rimfire
25/06
.375 H&H

Now shotguns are a whole 'nuther story! Man cain't have too many shotguns!

Okay [Big Grin]

CZ 550 lamintaed heavy 22/250
CZ 550 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser
CZ 550 .300 Winchester Magnum
CZ 550 .375 H&H Magnum
CZ 550 .458 Lott Shortned to 20" Synthetic Stock.

All would wear Leupolds & warne or Talley mounts. The addition of 2 more choices frees up for a bit more specialization rather than "covering bases" hence leaving out the 9.3x62 & .416 Rigby and adding .300 win mag, .375 H&H and specialising with a .458 Lott. In my eyes the .416 Rigby can do a little .458 lott and a little .375 H&H.

Rate my choices [Smile]

Mee too - looks like fun
1. Pre-64 Mod 70 Varminter in .243 Win w/ Unertl 10x Vulture for prairie rats & goats
2. Pre-64 Mod 70 Westerner in .264 WM w/ 3x9 Weaver Micro Trac (the old one) for deer & elk and almost anything else that walks
3. New Mod 70 Classic Supergrade in 300 WM w/ Leopold VariX III 3x9 for travel. Can't trust baggage handlers with #s 1 or 2.
4. Ruger M77 Magnum in .416 Rigby w/ 1.5x5 Leopold for stuff that might bite
5. Springfield Mod 87A in 22LR w/ factory sights. This one hangs over the back door and gets as much use and the other 4 put togeather.
Don't be jealous, took me a lifetime to put this battery togeather.

The question being an all inclusive five gun battery.

6.5-06 30 Degree Improved
30-06 Standard
375 H&H Standard
Left Hand Dakota Blueprinted Actions
All custom Hart, Kreiger, Shilen or Lilja barrels Customed by a benchrest quality gunsmith.
All steel epoxy bedded in waterproofed Laminated Sako Hunter Style Stocks for the field and Sister XXX Walnuts for show.
All wearing Leupolds VX-IIIs - Talley Bases and rings trued and lapped. I would say LPS's on the 06 & 375 but can't see the difference.
6.5-06 a 6.5-20X50 30mm EFR -Unbelieveable scope.
30-06 and 375 both would wear 2.5-8 X 36mm.
And just for varmits & Fun - a 6mmppc - Nesika LBRP classic action in a laminated Sehane Tracker and 6.5-20X50 30mm EFR Scope in lapped double screw Kelby rings on Davidson Bases to show off with.
Add a H&H Royal Double in 450 #2 Nitro Express.

Here's one way to do it:
(all prices used)
22LR repeater, Marlin M60, $75
6.5 Swede, 96, of course, $200
30-06 or 280 bolt, Model 70 Classic, $400
8x57 M, - you guessed it - a VZ24, $100
45/70, Marlin 1894, $400

That's under 1200 bucks for way more than you need. The Mausers are for fun.

Also I find it interesting that nobody has listed the 270 as their favorite.

Keeping the choices to centerfires only then I'll go with,

1.] .22 Hornet for varmints and targets out to 175 yds.

2.] .223 WSSM to cover the farther distances

3.] .25-06 for the biggest varmints up to big game in the 500 lb. class

4.] .300 Weatherby Magnum for almost everything else

5.] .375 Weatherby Magnum for what the .300 doesn't cover.
