I just picked up a 99% sako A1 Stoeger import. Shiny deep blueing, nice gloss walnut stock, slick 24" barrel. This rifle just looks and feels right to me. Oh yeah, it came with redfield sako style mounts and a vari x III 3.5 x 10 x40mm.

I brought it home, cleaned the barrel, and shot 3 groups that were one hole(only slightly ragged)groups at 50 yds. can't wait to stretch it out a little

What is the twist rate on these rifles? I'm guessing 1:12???

What cartridge is it chambered for? Is this your first Sako A1? I am hooked on all the A series, but the A1 is just a sweet little action; it fits the 223 length cartridges perfectly. Lou

It is a .223 and is SWEET. Why someone doesn't make a little action like that anymore is beyond me.

Shot it at 100yds yesterday. shot several 1/2" groups with a warm barrel, high wind(15mph), and bulk loaded (Georgia Arms) ammo with the 52 gr Speer. BTW, the 52gr speer is ruthless to gray squirrels. Gotta keep em off the bird feeder...

I currently have AIs in 17 Rem, 222, and 223. I have had many duplicates of each. I agree, few make an action that fits a specific group of cartridges, like Sako. Personally, I won't buy a rifle that has a long action, but is chambered for a short cartridge. Stay safe, Lou

The A-1 is the second best action Sako built..the L-461 that preceeded it was the best of the bunch...My 6x45 is a L-461..I love those little actions. mine has a pre 64 M-70 safety made from a piece of bull barrel..pretty slick.

yep, I was looking for a pre-Garcia L461 when I ran across this A1. Love those Vixens, but not too fond of the looks of the Rhiimki (sp?). This one is doomed to my belonging for life. maybe I'll post some pics.

BTW - If you run across any others that are for sale for a decent price, please let me know.

Beautiful rifle. Yours is an earlier transition gun, probably made in 78 -79. It has the AI action, but has the Vixen stock, instead of the Hunter stock, which I prefer. You won't get rid of that one. Lou

I have several L461s and one A-I. All are magnificent little rifles. The only differences in the two actions are the shrouded cocking piece of the A-1 (some late L-series also used the shroud) and the bolt handle on the A-I is just a little longer and shaped very slightly differently to the L461. The A-1 is also occasionally found with a synthetic magazine follower. Wouldn't take for any of mine.
