Once I get my Savage Ejection issue resolved. I want to get the ball rolling on "economical" 260 Rem build since I cannot find what I like in Factory Rifles. I think I'd like to use a Commercial Action mostly because the cost of converting/updating an older military safety, trigger, etc could be similar to a commercial action. My plan is to use a mid weight 24"-26" barrel and coat the whole thing in DuraCoat or a Bake-on coating system. I am still undecided on the stock. Right now I am leaning towards using a Zastava 98 or Savage/Stevens action. I do like the appeal of having a Mauser based action to start my project. What action would you use assuming you want to have a gunsmith do as little as required? "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then is not an act, but a habit"--Aristotle (384BC-322BC)

MT, You might look into a Montana 1999 action, or barreled action. I am building a light 6mm/284 on a stainless action as we speak. Doug

I started with a Winchester push feed featherweight in .243 and simply rebarreled it using a Douglas featherweight barrel..... It's a great rifle!!!!! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Great caliber selection. The 260 Rem is finally getting the attention is deserves as a quiet, low recoil, and accurate tackdriver.

Like Vapodog said, just find a short action, bolt rifle that you like in .243, 7-08, or .308 and rebarrel it. No alterations needed. Aim for the exit hole

Remington 700. The Winchester will limit your COAL to magazine length.

Do they make a Winchester Classic FW? (I can't keep track of all the new models...) If so, for a CRF inexpensive model, I'd just rebarrel one of those. If I wanted a fancier, more expensive CRF, I'd start with just about any '98 or newer Mauser. There is no need for CRF in a .260 Remington though. Hardly a DG rifle. For a push feed, the cheapest route is probably a Savage bolt gun of whichever model you like, especially if you are left-handed. My own personal choice for a push feed would be a Remington Model 725 if I could find another one. All it would require would be a new barrel. I built my 260 ona Sako L579, but an AII would also work nicely. My second choice would be a M70 short action. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

Buy a push feed winchester 70 in 6.5x55 and call the project "complete". Never follow a bad move with a stupid move.

Start with a long action Stevens Mod. 200. replace whatever barrel with a Shaw .260 deep throated barrel to inteligently use heavy bullets. Work on trigger or replace.stir gently with a little utilitarian ezpertise and Voila!!! roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. I had my 260 built on a Browning A-Bolt LH micro hunter. The threads are very fine and it was not easy to get the barrel off. But I like the 60 degree bolt throw and the size of the package. It's comparable in size to a Remington Model Seven.

Gidday Guys, I'd go with Dr Lou with the L579 then the AII and finally I have been thinking about a Rem Mohawk or M600 with th medium weight 22" barrel and replace the plastic bottom with a steel one and as Roger says Viola!! Happy Hunting Hamish

Thanks for the M70 Classic FW link Vapo - With a lightweight 2x7-X scope and a new barrel, that would make a nice .260 for just about anyone. (I'd add iron sights to the new barrel if it was for me. I dropped a rifle once and ended up with an objective bell bent at about 40-45 degrees, touching the barrel. It's hard to continue a hunt with that situation and no backup sights.) I did have to laugh though when the ad copy at the linked-to site said it still has a schnabel "just like the original". As you likely recall, the original CRF M70FW (1955 introduction if I remember rightly) did NOT have a schnabel at all, not even as an extra cost option unless you went the custom shop/special order route. To my eyes and hands they looked better and felt better without one. But would still make a nice .260, schnabel forend and all. I have two 260s on Remington 700 short actions that are fantastic shooters. One is a 40x target rifle and the other is one of the Limited Editions. The LE has an extremely long throat. This is the most economical I can find: http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/edge You could get one in .308 or 7mm-08, a barrel nut wrench, and a .260 go gauge and do the barrel install yourself. Then sell the .308 barrel to make it more economical.

no one mentioned the Marlin XS 7 short action... That would make a dandy rig also, like a Stevens 200 but with an 'accutrigger' style on it..cheaper than the Stevens also..

I don't own a Winchester but I have to admit that the picture posted above is a very sleek little outfit. The Rem model 7 looks similar but not quite as pleasing. I don't think there would be enough difference in push feed actions from either maker to argue over. It seems around here anyway you can find the short Remington for less money. DW

I've been watching for a short action Winchester push feed for a long time......and they are almost nonexistent.....Then again there's no where the numbers of them in the field as Remingtons..... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." . M77mkII Ruger stainless . .. My problem is deciding between building a 260 , or buying a 6.5 Creedmoor ..With the Creed all I would need do from the Target rifle configuration it comes in is buy a black synth. oem stock . and shorten the barrel if I felt it would help .. .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Gumboot, did you ever decide on your 6.5. The reason I ask is I recently purchased a Ruger Hawkeye Creedmoor and then another project idea comes along. I may have an interest in sellling this one. I have the rifle, box and everything it came with along with 66 rounds of factory 120 AMax loads. I have only shot 14 rounds so far. Let me know if you have an interest. Les
