I have a M700 Classic in 257 Roberts that patterns, yesterday at the range I shot some 117 Sierra pro hunters with 45.0 gr of H4350 through the chrono & got 3050 fps, I thought the chrono was bad so I shot the same load through another chrono & got the same speed. My custom M700 with a Lilja 3 grove 24" barrel gets 2850 fps with the same load & my M700 25'06 gets 2975 fps with 49.0 gr of IMR 4350 & 117 Sierras.

I think I am going to back down to 43.0 gr of IMR 4350, get around 2,800 fps & hope it resolves my accuracy problems.

I have the same rifle and can get tiny little groups with 100 grain bullets but it does not like anything heavier. IMR4350 and 100 grain Nosler Balistic Tips is my favorite load.

I'd say you have a good barrel and are pushing 63-65,000. I bet 43 will only slow you down to around 2900

As usual just my $.02

I hope I am not that high the Hodgen online data shows only 46,600 @ 2,866 for a 115 gr bullet With IMR 4350 & 44,400 from H4350 @2,777 fps.

115 GR. NOS PART IMR IMR 4350 45.5 2866 46,600 CUP

115 GR. NOS PART Hodgdon H4350 43.0 2777 44,400 CUP

It looks like IMR 4350 is a better powder than H4350 on a Roberts.

Just for a comparison my 23" barreled Roberts gets 2825 average with 117 Sierra's and 41.5 grains of IMR-4350 in WW cases and either WW or CCI large rifle primers. Pressure unknown.
This load is very accurate in my rifle and my brothers Rem 700.

20" Remmie M7MS. 44.0 of H4350 and a 117 SGK gives me a consistent 2,850 fps.

Robert

Not the same rifle in my case, no pun intended, but my Winchester M70 Featherweight shoots decent groups with 100 grain bullets but anything heavier is all over the place. The 120 gr. Speer Hot Cores did 3.5 to 4.0" at 100 yards. Frowner Gues that's OK as my Ruger #1 25-05 won't shoot 100 gr. bullets worth a damn but gives tight groups with the Speers.

I'd stay with the 45 grains (assuming no pressure signs) and agree with Ramrod that you're pushing 60-65,000 PSI which is not a problem.

As to the accuracy.....have the barrel free floated and I'm betting that problem disappears!

Really?
I normally taylor my loads to my rifles not come up with a load I want my rifle to shoot then start tweaking my rifle to get there.
If it were mine I'd play with the load to see where it gets you if nothing shoots well then start tweaking the rifle.

Really?

Yes really....if it's shooting like a shotgun the load isn't going to fix it!.....at least not likely

At least that's my interpretation of this statement.

I've never seen a M-700 that would not shoot groups of some reasonable nature that didn't have a bedding problem and that's almost always barrel channel issues,.

I pretty much run 42.5 of H4350 for all bullets 115-120. So far it has been very accurate with 115 NBTs, 117 Pro-Hunters, 117 SST and 120 Interlock HP. The only bullet it didn't shoot well was 120 Grand Slams. Velocities run between 2700-2800 which is plenty fast for CNC bullets. Nosler Ballistic tips worked well at that velocity on a 120 boar (40 yards complete pass through) and a corsican ram (125 yard spine shot). I loaded the 120 Interlocks this season for deer although I keep waffling on which caliber to use (257R, 6.5x55 or 7mm-08).

I am usually a lurker on .257Rob threads.

My rifle likes 120gr Partitions, but it wears a 1-9 twist barrel. I suspect the rifles shooting 100gr or less are 1-11 or slower twist.

What kinds of twist rates are in ya'lls quarterbores?

My Kimber is a 1-10. It has no problems with heavy bullets.

I've had a number, all 10" twist except one. All handle 120gr bullets without a problem. Some prefer 120's, some prefer 100's, but IMO, it's not the twwist rate that determine preference.

My Roberts has a 1 in 10" twist and really shoots the 117 and 120 bullets into tiny groups at 2800 fps.
I can't get it to like the 100's all that well but am so happy with the way it shoots 117's that I don't see a need to work much on the 100's.
They are working well on Mule Deer and Antelope too, can't seem to recover any of those Sierra 117's (all exit wounds) and the animals drop like the rugs been jerked out from under them.

Has this rifle any history of accurcy? It may not be the load?
Bedding, scope, screws touching things they aren't supposed to? Remingtons have a number of little quirts that need attention, before they will shoot....

olarmy I am using the Sierra Gamekings with the Spitzer Boat Tail.
I've shot Antelope out past 450 yards and got exits, Large Mule Deer buck at 200 yards was angling away entered behind shoulder and exited 3/4 of the way up his neck (over 24" of penetration) couple more antelope at 275 and 280 yards and another at nearly 200 yards all had exit wound. Shot quite a few coyotes with it too but one of them took 3 hits! I think these bullets are fairly hard.
I might shoot an elk with it this year as well if I find the right meat bull while I'm Deer hunting.
The picture below is 3 different groups with the Sierra Gamekings. Left group was my first I then over adjusted my scope and shot the right hand group then I correctly adjusted and shot the middle group.
Good luck with yours.

My favorite bullet for my daughter's 257 Bob is the 110 Nosler Accubonds.

It was great weather this morning so I hit the rang with the "problem" 257 Roberts. Ran into a problem immediately dropped my box of test 257 reloads, there is on way to tell what is what so the powder will be dumped down the toilet and the bullets recycled. After the original post I realized that the bore of the 257 hadn't been cleaned in 4-5 years it took 2 days to clean the bore but the accuracy came back. I still have a fast barrel with 42.5 gr of H4350 & a 115 partition I'm getting 3,025 fps the 75 gr vmax with 44.0 gr of H4895 is going 3505. I really want about 2,850 fps so I may back down my load a little more.

I am also posting some groups of my 25'06 almost stock M700. It will shoot this type groups day in & day out. Only problem is my # 3 257 Roberts is faster.
