Well I haven't started to mess just yet but the next loading project is going to be my Win Feather 308 which happens to be a pre 64. I bought this rifle for the kids to take out hunting, well now the kids aren't interested in going hunting so I thought I might as well work up a load for it anyway.
Varget the go to powder for 308 in hunting loads?
Anyone have some bullet weight suggestions?
Thanks FS

I don't hunt, but if you want to see what your rifle is capable of try 45.5 grs. Varget and 155 match bullets. I also use 168 gr. SMK's. Good out to 850 yards (accuracy wise).

My .308's like BLC(2), Nosler BT's and CCI BR4 primers.

IME about half of the .308 like that combination. Other great poweders are RL15, IMR 4064, W748.

Varget is a great powder for the bolt action .308 Win. I like to use the 150 gr. Balistic tips, accubonds, and of course you can never go wrong with a Nosler partition. The .308 is a really good deer and elk round IMO. I use the 180 gr. Noslers on elk in my Savage 99F when hunting horseback.

Other powders that I like in the .308 are WW-748 and IMR-4064..RL-15 is also an excellent powder. Mostly I use Varget in the bolt guns and WW-748 in the lever guns.

The "go to" load for my .308 is 45-46 grains of Reloader 15, WLR primer & a Win. Case with a 150 grain Hornady BTSP (just under 2800 FPS). To be honest, though, my Rem 700 shoots MOA or better with almost any combination that I feed it, & the POI does not even change much with different loads.
I have had 3 different .308s & they were all accurate. I think it is one of those calibers that is easy to find a good load for.
Here in Tennessee, 150 grains is just about perfect for our "smaller" white tails. Up your way, 165s may be a bit more effective.

f-s,

Do a Google for .308 target loads and select some of the @ 2500-2600 fps "accuracy" recipes with pretty much any medium-burner you've got on hand - then top with a 150 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip.

I prefer IMR-4064 or VV N-140.

If that won't wring out about all your rifle has to offer accuray wise for starters then something may be amiss. After that, don't change anything; go hunting with the same load.

The .308 Win. & Nosler 150 gr. BT's is a match made in heaven IMO.

Cheers,

My .308 likes IMR 4064 and Nosler 150 grain BT's as well as Benchmark and 140 grain Barnes X bullets. 1/2-3/4 inch groups with these loads at 100 yards.

i like 42 grs i-4895 in the 308 with 150 gr hornadys.
varget and rl-15 are other companies version of 4895.
4895 was the original powder developed for the t-58 cartridge, [the 308's original designation when under government development]
the 4064 powder was orgionally a slow lot of 4895 powder that found enough favor.
and many times pulldown [milsurp 4895] powder is the same burn rate as 4064.
