If you had a long action laying around and a good supply of 7mm Mauser brass, would you consider a 6mm Ackley Remington? I am torn between this and the 6mm-284. I don't have 6mm-284 or 6.5-284 brass, but like the idea of using it as well.

Having sold my 6 A.I. and wishing I had not...wanting a coyote/range rig, I am building another and the last part of the project is to be here today...the trigger. I have a 3338x284 and I enjoy it, but don't want to get into another but it is a good round...altho I thought about using it I got to thinking it just might make barrel life a little shorter, the 6x284. I have built several 6 AIs. and I've became a fan of it as well as some of the people I built some for...we all agree it's a better cartridge then the 243 A.I..( that's our thinking, other will defend the 243 A.I. and that's ok.) Won't be long and I'll start on the Remington 700 fiberglass project. Never thought I'd do a plastic gun for myself but collecting the parts has been fun and I'll get to shoot an old friend again, the 6 AI. P.S. Brass is a bitch to find right now...but finally gathered up a good supply, It can be had. Also I'm going to try 115 grain bullets with close to .600 S.D. and try ranges I have not shot before??? _____________________ Steve Traxson

In 1966 I was stationed at Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, VA, and in addition to my regular duties was shooting on the base rifle team. One of the team members, a sergeant, asked me if I would like to buy his Model 70 hunting rifle. I asked him what caliber and he replied, "6mm Page Sooper Pooper." I then asked him how much and he said $75.00, so a short time later I was in possession of my first pre-64 Model 70. There had been an article in Gun Digest a year or so before written by Warren Page, extolling the virtues of his creation, so I was vaguely familiar with the caliber. However, I bought the rifle with the idea of rebarreling it to .308 for use as a target rifle. That idea languished through several years of graduate school, and finally when the day arrived to make the conversion, I decided to give the cartridge a workout. I loaded up some ammunition using .244 Remington brass and took it our to a friend of mine's private range. After preliminary sighting in with an 8X 1" Unertl target scope, I fired a five shot group at 300 meters. It measured under 1.5". I still have the rifle, unaltered. The .240 PSP is simply a .244 case blown out to a sharper shoulder. The difference between it and a 6mm Ackley is not worth mentioning. Warren Page developed the cartridge to use with heavy bullets on medium game, but for me it was s superlative long range varmint cartridge. It combined the 10" twist of the .243 with the larger case of the .244, a combination endorsed to some degree by Remington when they changed the name to 6mm Remington and twist to 10" as well.

I had a 6mm Rem AI built a while ago. I had wanted a 1 in 8 twist to shoot the heavy high BC stuff, but I allowed myself to be convinced to go with a 1 in 14. Barrel is 27". It shoots 68-70gr bullets at 3850-3950 fps. The rifle is a custom but shoots 10-12mm/200m. It is a lot of fun. It depends on what you want to do with the rifle, but it is a laser and shoots lights out.
