I’m looking for a short, handy rifle in .243 for coyote hunting out to 200 yards. I’ve narrowed it down to two Remington youth models: The Model Seven and the new Model 700 SPS.

They both have similar weight, barrel and overall lengths, but is there a reason to prefer one over the other?

Differences as far as I can tell:
1. The SPS seems to have a heavier barrel, while the Model Seven has a tapered, thinner barrel.
2. The Model Seven has a slightly different action than the 700 SPS.
3. The Model Seven has optional iron sights on some models.

Can anyone speak to the differences between these two models? Specifically what’s the difference between the two actions? Bottom line, which one would be better for 200 yard coyote shooting?

More info on both at:

Appreciate any insights,

The Model 7 is a pretty rifle....

The ADL, now SPS are more, 'bang them around in the field and no one will know the difference' rifles...

That alone should be enough to base which one would fit your needs best.... the 243 will do just fine out of either platform...

I'm thinking the M-7 CDL is a beautiful rifle in .243 and with 55 grain bullets will destroy coyote a very long ways away.....with 100 grain bullets will do double duty on deer.
The more I see of the M-7 the more I like it.

The Model 7 action is a half inch shorter than the Model 700 short action. The only real difference is the rear bridge scope hole is located differently and the bolts aren't interchangeable. The basic design is the same.
