Hey guys, last night on the street behind my house there was a drive-by shooting (I guess that was what it was, they were driving when they shot, don't know what the hell they were shooting at).

So, I heard 3 quick shots, obviously semi-auto. I thought though that it was small bore maybe 9mm. Turned out that it was a 223. My question, should I have been able to tell the difference between the 223 and 9mm?

Plain jain neighborhood. I have a cinderblock wall behind the house, that is the main street back there, wall is full length of the street. Other side of the street is the same, cinderblock wall all along. Only difference one side to the other is my side is elevated about 6-8 feet on dirt. street is nice and wide, two lanes each side with a large center divide. Looks great, just seem to have some unpleasant elements around here right now.

On the range were are shots come from the same direction etc. I can tell the difference between pistols, rifles and shotguns. But, we had a guy running around our neighborhood shooting a pistol about 0430 a couple of weeks ago. I was up taking my wife to the airport. The Lincoln has a great sound system and thought the shots were on the XM car radio. The wife recognized the sound just outside the car. I called the police got a guy with a pistol shortly thereafter. I don't know if I'll ever know what he was shooting at. We used to hear poachers shooting a shotgun in the woods not far from the house at night. I called it in a couple of times but the police didn't get anybody. I haven't heard poaching since bout 100 acres of woods and march was cleared for a shopping center. It's sure easy for liberal politicians in Maryland to turn that kind of stuff into anti-gun legislation. Law-abiding gun owners are certainly less trouble to catch and punish than poachers or armed felons.

Generally one should be able to tell the difference in the report of a fire arm . Provided that they have been around them to know the difference .

M16 makes a completely different sound then say a AK47 or 9MM or 22 rimfire . You'll dam well know the difference if it's a 50 Cal. !. Thats a fact . ... salute

They added a wing onto the VAMC in Boise about 1982, and I was hospitalized for some surgery that fall. Had to be moved to the old section the first evening...they had installed the euro-style door latches instead of knobs and the latch operating sounded ex-fucking-lactly like an AK-47 bolt cycling... They replaced ALL of those the next week.

could you say that a pistol is more of a pop, shorter sound while a rifle is more of a longer noise, louder noise?? Weird I can tell the difference when I hear them shooting in the woods but cannot describe it.
