Seen a Lefty Win stainless rifle in .244 AI for sale. Rifle is built for bench/varmint work as it has a heavy barrel and McMillan stock with a wider, flat forearm than what you normally see. Winchester only made the lefty's with a long action so I been considering buying it. Since I really have no use for the .244 AI what are some good choices for rechambering? Don't want to put any more money into this than required so would like to keep the original barrel. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Cut off the entire chamber, rethread and rechamber to 6mm Rem. Since it's a heavy barrel you should be able to do it. You can also do .240 Wby, 6mm-06 and .243 suprerrockchucker.....but the 6mm Rem is the most practical. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Any wildcats on the 06 case necked down to 6mm? My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

IIRC, Rich Jamison (writer out of Oregon) had a full length 6mm-06 some years ago. Depending on twist it might be a good long range rifle. Berger made a heavy bullet for them, a VLD around 106(?)gr. You would need a 1:9 or even a 1:8 for them. What is yours? rich

Havent purchased the rifle yet, just considering it. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

The 6mm-.284 might clean up the AI chamber and won't require a bolt face change..... You might have to set the barrel back a bit but I'd bet against it!....no big deal either way! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I'd rebarrel it if I did buy it. Twist in the .244 is too slow. That's why they change the twist and renamed it 6mm. I would pass unless you use only light for caliber bullet weights.

What do you want to use the rifle for?

Shoot it as is, one has to be pretty naive to think that a 85-90gr. bullet isn't adequate for deer or antelope but 100gr. is. Stepchild NRA Life Member

Amen, I'd keep it as is, and shoot Coyotes and Wolves at long range, along with game animals Stepchild mentions. My std 244 (1-12" twist bbl) shoots 95 gn Nosler partitions better than any other bullet. 100 gn Partitions shot not so good.
