Is there a factory round faster than the 240 wby? If not factory, what wildcat would be faster? NRA Patron member

Factory? 243 WSSM, but I would consider it pretty much the logistical equivalent of a wildcat, now days. And then the sky's the limit to donor brass, RUM probably the ridiculous extreme.

Search for the .240 Incinerator. If I recall it was getting 4,400 with a 70gr NBT. Essentially a improved 6mm-264 Win Mag. Auburn University BS '09, DVM '17

Hodgdon shows 3812 (max load) with a 70 gr bullet for the 6mm Rem. A max load (same bullet) for the 240 Wby is shown to be 3505.

I saw that. Not sure why Hodgdon only listed one 240 wby load and one powder in their on line data, but many loads for the 6mm. So their data is incomplete. I had a 240wby once upon a time. It produced far more than 3500 FPS with 70gr BT bullets. NRA Patron member

I agree. In a 26" barrel it might edge the .240 Weatherby in a 24" barrel. But individual rifles may make it give-or-take.

df06 you HAD a 240 Wby that produced more than 3500 fps. Was wondering if you no longer have it because you shot out the barrel with all that velocity?

Nope, it was not shot out, at all. Guess I shot it less than 500 rounds, mostly paper, but 3-4 antelope and a few coyotes. My records show 75 Hornady V Max 3780 FPS 90 grain Scirrico 3294 95 Ballistic tip 3345 This rifle had a 26” barrel Sold it in a stupid time, probably to finance another project. Now kinda thinking about getting another. NRA Patron member

A 6mm/06 has the same rim diameter as the .240 but since the body of the .240 reduces just ahead of the belt and that of the 6mm/06 doesn't, the '06 case holds a bit more powder. Therefore, all things being equal the 6mm/06 is capable of higher velocities at the same pressure. Parent brass is cheaper (and much more plentiful) for the 6mm/06, and since both use the same full length action the 6mm/06 would seem to be the better alternative. If you want even more oomf, then you could use the Improved version of the 6mm/06. If you want to get similar performance in a shorter action then the 6mm/284 is the ticket.

My 6mm Rem AI does well. A 6-06 or 243 Catbird and 6mm-284 also does well but I don't have personal experience. You could look at a 240 Hawk off the 280 case. I'm not sure it is worth doing anything other than a 6mm AI (mine is extremely accurate) or maybe the 6-284 or 6-06... but it need not make sense.

I had a bunch Of good hunting with my 6mm X .270 IMP.designed to handle Fred Barnes' heavy bullets. It was based on the .270 because the reamer went in .050" too deep. It turned out great ,however. The first barrel length was 30" than cut to 28" and finally 26". Drawing the long barrels out of a saddle scabbard was not easy. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! If you have a short action with a mag bolt face, the 243WSSM would be about the same thing. Hodgdon says 3821 with superformance and a 70NBT. I saw WSSM brass on the shelf at sportsman's outhouse last time I was there. I think they had factory ammo on the shelf too.

My son’s 6mm Rem (used to be mine!) shoots Nosler 55 gn BT an honest 4012 fps. It’s devastating on prairie dog. Shoot Safe, Mike NRA Endowment Member

Would be slick if someone made a short single shot action for it.

U Grinch: IF you think that does it well. Try hot 110gr in an '06. From the impact point the "red V starts and runs til the red mist runs out". No particles left of either fur nor flesh. That's what i used for years when I only had one gun. George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!" LM: NRA, DAV, George L. Dwight

I once owned a target rifle chambered to .243 Superrockchucker.....one helluva cartridge....but in fact it's just a different type of 6mm-06.....and further I didn't find that it offered me much more than a 6mm Rem I had at the time. Some will shoot a bit faster, but the results won't be seen in the field. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
