I recently bought a Savage .243 (Wal-Mart special) for my daughter to shoot. It seems to be shooting all over the place. I've only shot it about 30 times and tried different bullets and weights, but not much luck. What should I do?

could be soooo many things with this little bit of info. My first suggestion would be to check the screws.

Savages tend to shoot very well so I'm guessng it's something simple and hopefully easy to find like a loose gaurd screw or scope mount screw etc.

May also need a stock bedding job. My Savage VLP
in .243 needed it.

Sometimes the recoil lug is a few thousandths
higher than the action. In such a situation, the
front scope mount will ride on the top of the
recoil lug. If you find this to be a problem with
yours, a simple fix is to grind enough relief
from the mount so it will clear the lug.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I checked the screws and they were tight, guess I'm looking for a scope now, we'll see what happens.

I put a Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 on the Savage and had it bore sighted. I have some 80 and 100 grain bullets. I'm going to try and shoot tomorrow, any suggestions?

If you have any of the Federal blue box 80 gr Power-Shok ammo, I would try that first. My Stevens 200 in .243 loves that stuff. It shoots as well as my best handloads. Is your Savage an accu-trigger model? My Stevens factory trigger was a little rough. Replaced it with a Rifle Basix trigger.

Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

I started shooting at 25 yds with 80 grain Federal (blue box) shells and was shooting 1 inch and better groups at the end. Dead on with 80 grain Federal shells at 25 yds. Shot at 100 4 inches high, 200 2 inches high, 300 about 3 inches low. My time was getting short so I switched to 100 grain and was shooting much closer, it seems to like the 100 grains better. I'll try again as soon as I get a chance, it looks to me as if I need to be low at 25, so I'll be a little high at 100, close at 200, and a little low at 300. Don't know if this is right but I think I'll try that next. Thanks for the input.
