In a MODERN ACTION rifle...Ballistic-ally, how would these two compare with a 120-140gr bullet out to 600 yds for deer-sized game?

popcornIf you are a reloader ( same pressure ) the 6.5X55 would have a definite edge at the longer ranges. Both would be great for deer at reasonable distances. beerroger

You have to run the hell out of the 6.5x47 to better the swede. Which you can do with Lapua brass which is very strong & has small primer pockets.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Look at the size of the case, the 6.5x55 holds more powder, end of story..

The 6.5x47 is a 222 magnum case....You can probably get right up there but perhaps at risk to your health and certainly it would detrimental the longgivity of our brass etc.

Ray - I think you are confusing the 6x47 which is a necked up .222 Mag.
The 6.5x47 Lapua (and its smaller wildcat 6-6.5x47 Lapua) are based on a shortened .308 case.
But the 6.5x55 is still a much bigger case...

Ok, I'm hearing a lot of info about the 6.5x47 from folks and I'm not sure they know what their talking about.

1. How fast can a 140 be run in the x55 from a 22", 24" or 26" barrel?

2. I safely run my 140 VLD's in my 26" x47 up to 2960 fps with Rel 17.

No two barrels are alike, but according to the latest Vihtavuori 6,5x55SKAN data: (380MPa, only modern strong actons!)
Test barrels: Sauer 200STR (hammer forged):
Lapua Scenar (GB458) 9gram/139gr. C.O.L: 80mm/3.15", N560-max 49,1gr:
670mm/26": 2842fps.
700mm/27,5": 2862fps.
740mm/29": 2887fps.

The Sierra 140HPBT probably slightly slower?

Some barrels maybe you can get 2900+, but I fear barrel- and case-life may suffer.

2960fps in the x47, that is smoking fast! Smiler
