how good of a medium range deer cartridge would the 6mm bench rest make say out to 250 yards? and would there be any feeding issues in a rem 700 short action?

It will kill but other cartridges will do a hell of a lot more tissue damage and get the job done better consistantly.

As this is written the question that comes to mind ; how many postings will there be on DEAD IS DEAD , IT"S ALL IN SHOT PLACEMENT, or DUPICATES YOUTH LOAD?

Can it? YES, but there are better choices for clean killing of game animals. popcornroger

Get the 6mm BR barrel in something like a 1:8 or 1:9 twist rate, that will allow you to shoot heavier (as well as probably lighter) bullets. That makes for a very versatile gun.

See this article about making a 6mm BR feed in a M700 SA:

The 6BR at the ranges you are talking about will do just fine. Find a good accurate bullet for your rifle and hunt with confidence.

I've killed a number of animals using a little 6mm-.223, and the barrel lengths ranged from 13.75 to 15" in XPs and Contenders to a full bull 22" on a 788. Most of the animals I took fell to the long-discontinued Sierra 80 grain SSP in the pistols. In the pistol-length tubes the 6x45 runs about 150 slower than a 6BR, so you 'll have no trouble with deer-sized game given a proper bullet and good shot placement.

In the 6BR, the 80 grain Speer is an excellent choice. It will give you flat trajectories, expand sufficiently and give you plenty of penetration. You may also want to give the 90 grain Ballistic Tip a whirl.

Killed one deer at 200 yds, lung shot, 70gr TNT at 3400 mv, ran 60 yds, fell over dead, another deer at 400, yes 400 yds that had been lasered to the edge of a field prior to the shot, double lunged, exited using a fast twist rifle, 105 amax, 2840 mv, deer dropped in 20-25yds....I'd do it again and again, using an accurate rifle, and properly sighted rifle, at known range......it will kill fine if you do your job....I'd use an amax on longish shots, but at the ranges you state a 85 BTHP at 3100 or better, or a 95 b tip at 3000 mv, (mine clocked just a hair over 3k in 26" bbl)

This round is way under rated, as it is SO shooter friendly, and shot placement is so predictable due to accuracy and light recoil.

I use my 6x45 (6mm-223)a lot on deer, in open country its a nice caliber, but it will not, on ocassions, leave a blood trail so you must be very careful with it, they could concievably escape on a forrest floor..I have seen deer lost with the .243 and 6mm Rem for this very reason and on several ocassions...

I have placed a 200 yard limit on my 6x45 for shooting deer.

I use the old 75 gr. Barnes X ( have a small supply left) and now I am using the 75 gr. GS custom and works as well or better..

I have also used the 75 gr. Noslers but they are a tad soft for deer, as are the 80 gr. Speers..

The biggest mistake you can make with a 6x45 or 6BR IMO is pushing the bullet beyond its capabilities, slow it down and it will perform better in most cases.

Agreed on importance of blood trail, but my 243 w/85x did a DRT on a hog at 240 yds, 3100 mv, and my 6BR did 3k with 95's so I feel sure they will match my old 20" shorty #1 I had in 243 for speed, in fact factory 243 ammo in 95 WW Silver ballistic tip or whatever they call it I think shot around 2900......my 26" BR had an advantage, but most say 8-12fps per " of bbl is all....

Re: bullets for quick kills, the 85 BTHP, "reports often say do exit' but DRT seems to be the norm, also the 87 Hornady version, but 95 b tips have also a stellar reputation, as do the 85 barnes, basically I feel the BR is 90-95% of the performance of a 243 in like bbl lengths and at 2/3 powder use, w/ less recoil and better accuracy.....if the industry would make a reliably 'ultra-short' action in BR, it'd make alot of shooters happy who'd try them, as heck 70's at 3400 should smoke varmints to a good range also, thereafter 87 vmax's take over, then 105 amaxs.......lots of flexibility....

But yes, you do have to recognize limits, pick shots, and your bullets, but they are very capable of a high percentage of DRT's if the shooter does their part and steers a good bullet, IMHO. I think someone who hunts from a stand/blind is best set up for 'selective shooting' on deer w/a BR.
