Hey fellas- I am becoming more and more interested in getting a Weatherby XXII in 17 HMR. Seems like they've been out for a couple of years now, but I haven't heard much about them from anyone on here. I've seen a couple in the stores and I really like the look. And of course it has that Anchutz appeal to me. I found this old AR link: http://forums.accuratereloadin...=850104279#850104279 And this review by Wayne van Zolle: RifleShooterMag.com Review I'd really like to hear personal opinions if anybody has any experience with this rifle. Thanks!

their previous rimfire was a semi-auto.....extremely accurate and a pretty gun. However it jammed terribly.....it was the worst rimfire I ever owned and I owned three trying to get a good one..... JUNK! I have not (and will not) try this gun for that reason.....and besides.....for $999 MSRP one can have a lot to pick from! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." The 22LR Bolt Action version is made by Anschutz in Germany for Weatherby. I saw them on the Auction sites during Christmas for $700. Just looked again in Feburary and I believe they were running around $735. I did not search on the 17cal, so I don't know if any were available or not. If anyone gets one, let us hear about how it shoots.

Champion Shooters Supply seems to be a pretty big dealer of Anschutz rifles. ChampionShooters.com The Anschutz Silhouette 1712 MS is built on the 54 action. Whereas the Weatherby XXII is built on the slimmer model 64 action. The 1712 MS is going for $1575 at C.S.S. The 1717D KL Monte Carlo is at $1560. But it seems like the 1717 D "Classic" is the same action model 54 action but is selling for $1050. To me, that's a big $500 jump for a Monte Carlo cheekpiece, even though I really love them on a scoped rifle. Anyway, if you have experience with the Weatherby XXII please speak up!

Seems to me that the Weatherby rifles come with a lot nicer piece of wood than the annies come with. FS

I would have to agree with you on that. The few that I have seen in the shops pretty much had the same quality of wood as the one below. A couple I saw pictures of on gunbroker.com were not quite this nice, but still better than any of the Anschutz (excluding the Meister Grade).

My Mark XXII, an autoloader, is the most accurate .22 rifle I have ever used. Made in Japan. I still don't forgive Pearl Harbor, but this rifle almost got me over the pain and anger. I have owned my Mark XXII since 1973. And it will just wear out an X-ring at 50 yards. Just one ragged hole, no matter how many shots I fire. Would I buy one of these Anschutz Weatherbys? Damn straight! Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Well, then a new Mark XXII might help you forgive any German wrongdoings as well! And while you're at it, let us know how they shoot. Seems like many people have admired them, but few have shot them. I guess I'm just going to have to find out for myself. Going to price-check at my favorite dealer tomorrow. It seems like Weatherby has a deal worked out with Talley for specific scope rings. I wrote them today to ask what they heights they had available. They've got them all in 1" and 30mm.

Kenati.... I have the same rifle, only with the Anschutz name. It is a tack driver with Hornady ammunition. I managed to buy on eBay, a brand new-old 2x7 Redfield with a dot reticule. It fits the little rifle perfectly.... And anything small and furry or feathery that I put that dot on turns biodegradable when I touch the trigger. The trigger, by the way, is adjustable. It has become my favorite rifle to carry around the acreage. Buy the rifle. Buy a couple of extra clips for it. Don't overburden it with a large, cumbersome, high magnification, huge objective scope. And lay in a huge stock of "Hummer" ammunition.......You will need it! Grant.

Thanks Oldmodel70! I'm getting excited about the possibilities. I ran upon this article from October 2008 that briefly reviews the XXII. The wood on the stock is better than anything I have seen personally. http://gunsmagazine.com/DOB1008.html

Well, over two years have passed and I still have the same itchy trigger finger for the XXII. I have since purchased a few "needed" (don't you just love that) guns in between, but I think this is going to FINALLY be next on my list. Any new updates or comments out there?

I certainly agree about the accuracy of the autoloader.....but it was the worst jamming machine I ever owned.....and I owned three of them over several years....all of them jammamatics /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Why don't you ask over at rimfirecentral.com? They have some very deep knowledge over there on all things rimfire. I don't know if Weatherby has it's own forum over there, but there's still a "general" forum if they don't. Nice folks there, just like here. Si tantum EGO eram dimidium ut bonus ut EGO memor

Well, Vapodog, I'll give your tendency to perseverate this much credit, even after over two years, you are consistent in your responses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perseveration
Thanks, Slowpoke Slim. Great suggestion!

I ended up swapping for a XXII in 22LR. I have a Compact Leupold 3-9x EFR on it at the moment, but plan to swap to a 6-24x for Accuracy Testing. The Trigger is adjustable, but even though Anschutz made it, it was still not as low as I wanted it. I'm very spoiled by the excellent Mike Walker designed Remington triggers. So, I looked it over closely and removed the Trigger Assembly from the rifle. It is powered by a small Coil Spring. And it just happens to be about the same size as a Ballpoint Pen Spring. I got a hook and fished out the Anschutz Spring, cut the Ballpint Spring to size, bent the Tag end inward a bit and worked it into the Trigger Housing. Came out working much better, or perhaps I should say it is now the way I like a Trigger. ----- Haven't shot it much yet, so I can't say just how accurate it will end up being. The small amount that I have shot it is very promising though, with tiny clusters at 25yds. Once I get the larger scope on it, then it should get very interesting. ----- Best of luck with your 17HMR.

That is American inginuity at it's finest. I did the same to a Browning A-Bolt many years ago. Worked out great! Please keep us posted. I'm curious how your accuracy testing turns out.

I got "1" extra magazine for mine and it was quite $$$pricey$$$, but I agree with the recommendations. Do it before you have things eating up your time which are impossible to avoid. I've got two ranges set up for myself and barely have enough time to go to either. So...., get it, ENJOY it, and tell us about it.

I purchased the newer bolt version, but in 22lr, a couple of years ago on the birthdate of my son. I mounted a gloss Leupold AO scope on it, sighted it in, and stuck it back in the safe. Son will get it when he's ready. Shot exteeeemely well! Oh, and it's darn pretty too!!! I have an Anschutz 1416 KDL in .22 lr, same gun as the XXII but with iron sights and a different stock. It is incredibly accurate, the factory test target is a 10 shot group at 50 meters that measures about 1/2 inch. Even better is the fact that it shoots just as well outside of the factory. I can put 5 shots into 1/2 inch at 50 yards using Blazer ammo. From the factory the trigger was a bit heavy for my liking, and fairly creepy with lots of takeup. However, simply following the directions in the manual allowed me to adjust it perfectly and it is now a very light, crisp, creep free trigger. Great little .22, you won't regret getting one It's not the caliber of the rifle that matters - It's the caliber of the man behind it.
