Hey Guys, I have a friend who's looking to buy a 17 HMR, anybody have any suggestions on brand? Can't be a semi-auto..so bolt or lever... give me your opinions. Thanks

I don't care for the cartridge as much as most other owners do.. however, I can verify the quality and accuracy of the Ruger 77/17 Heavy Barrel, the Marlin Stainless heavy barrel and the NEF break open single shot... Also been around enough guys with the upper end Savages with Laminated Stocks that have all been very accurate also.. Marlin's Cheaper ones, have been more accurate that Savage's cheaper ones, from what I have seen.. of course a CZ is a top notch rifle in any caliber...and very accurate.. or if you really want to impress everyone with your purchasing power, you can get an Anschutz.. but it won't be any more accurate than the CZ, and only slightly better than a Marlin, Savage or Ruger with a lower quality barrel..

I have a Marlin 917V I bought for my sons. Great little rig. Trigger has some creep, but shoots very well. I paid $200.00. My boys still prefer their old semi and bolt .22lr's. Mine hates the 17gr variety.

Really doesn't matter all that much as far as accuracy goes with the bolt's available. Only thing that matters is the depth of pocket! Marlin 17V or VS, Savage 93's, Ruger 77/17, CZ whatever manufacturer.......................the 17HMR is an inherrently accurate little cartridge!! Heavy barrel or light barrel, they all shoot ridicoulously well!!! Maybe the most amazing thing that burns gunpowder to ever be developed! In it's realm!! 150 yards or less!! Yes it can be used at distances further than that! Do I recommend it? NO! Especially for novices! My personal recomendation wwould be the heavy barreled Marlin or heavy barreled Savage. AFFORDABLE!! Not as pretty as a CZ or Anchutz but "how dead is dead?" Get yourself a 17HMR and try it out! You'll like it!! And even if you are a reloader, something is to be said for "watching bullet impact", not having to pick up brass and not having to reload even if using Blue Dot powder in the centerfires!! GHD PS: The Hornady and Remington loadings of the 17 grain HMR ammo seems to be the most consistant, accuracy wise of ammo tested across the board in the 17HMR rifles. Least accurate is the CCI loadings. Groundhog Devastation(GHD)

I just picked up a Savage 93R17 BTVS and its a bad little rifle. They can be had on Gunbroker for $350 new and less used in great condition and usually with optics. Heavy barreled, laminated wood thumbhole stock, all stainless. At 75 yrds it will shoot into the same holes with a 5 shot group. Stick a Mueller Eradicator scope on it and shoot the ears off squirrels at 100 yrds!!!

You can't go wrong with the Savage, but drop a small step down to the HM2. You won't notice the difference and the ammo is half as much.

I love the HMR except for the cost of the rounds. On sale I can shoot .223 for close to the same price. Saying that, I have a Sako Quad that's very nice and a Savage with the accu-trigger that's silly accurate. I hope I don't have to wait too much longer for the price of ammo to drop (a little at least)

I get 50 rds of 17HMR for about $11 locally. I haven't the time to load up .223 and at that price it's not worth it. Then, considering that components are just finally starting to become available again ofter over a year, it was simply too much effort to handload. Why bother when for $11 I get 50 highly accurate rounds? I'd rather spend what little free time I have shooting than sitting at my bench. Aut vincere aut mori

$10 online or $17 locally. 17M2 and 22LR are 1/4 of that... that's a lot more shooting. I'm just shooting paper and steel anyway.
