hey guys, im thinkin bout gettin a small cal for popin yotes, foxes, wolves, and cats. How loud is the .17?? would it be sufficent to take a wolf at any realistic ranges? or would I be better off to go for the 223 as a wolf round? also is there any actual recoil?

I have only limited experience with a .17 cal. And that was with a .17 Rem. I would want to be pretty close if I were to use it on wolves. I don't care how fast the .17's are, you will loose wolves it you use a .17. I would not say the .223 is ideal for wolves either.
Hmmmmm, I have only shot 3 yotes this month. One with a 17 HeBee, one with a 17 Ack Hornet and the last with a 17 Ack Bee. Granted none of them were over 200 yards. Granted they didn't drop dead in their tracks. All three went about 3 yards and died. No exit holes just a small entrance wounds about the size of a dime. All were shoulder shot. Watched the bullet hit. Now if you cant shoot real accurate then you might want to go with a 243 or something like that but for to 300 yards the 17s are plenty good. Brooks
DP, Negative on the wolves with the .17. There's gonna be several on this site that would use it but it's not a practical choice. On any given day with the perfect shot, a .17 will kill nearly anything. The key there is "perfect shot". It's not often your target is gonna pose for you. Nor is it likely that you will get good terminal ballistics from a broadside shot with a .17 on an 80 lb. wolf. I don't think it would be a good choice myself. Not when there are plenty of other calibers less than, say .25, that you could use. Hey for fox and coyote the .17 is the gun. You still have to make good shots but, it's a more practical choice for that size game. I love my .17s, but I would want more knock-down and penetration on an animal as large as a wolf. I'm curious, do you call wolves or ...how do you go about hunting them. I understand a fair amount of wolf hunting is done around the caribou migration.
Back when my dad had one of the first Remington 700 BDLs in 17 Remington (early-mid 1970s I belive),he killed several bucks with it.He will also be the first person to tell you that a 17 Remington is not a good choice for any game bigger than coyotes. It works like chain lightening when placed perfectly (and I mean PERFECTLY),but only a select few of us can shoot that well from field positions.
A 17 Remington would make one hell of a fox and coyote gun,but stick with at least a 243 or better yet a 25 caliber for wolves.

Thanks, im gonna opt for the AR-10 T national match, dont want those critters running off, maybe a AR-15 NM, dont know one of the two, I think a 223 could probably take a wolf, if not the 2-3-9 surely will stop him. As always, bullet placment is key.

Reloading the 17CCM--do the cases have a finite life? I'm a cartridge collector and am trying to find some of these cases--both 17 & 20 CCM-- would be happy with worn-out cases.

Check out the post by this guy who shoots numbers of wolves each year with a .17. 110 lb critters he says. The link is below, scroll down to the post on the wolf pics.

Those are my Pics over at jims site can you take wolves out to a fair distance Yes with the normal 17 you will really have to limit your shot to 100 yards to about 150.on wolves does it make a lot of noise NO if you are on a open Lake moast of the noise is sucked up and you can get dubbles becous a wolf just hits the ground and another will come over to see what happened to his friend.
I had a normal 17 rem and as was stated they will and do sometimes take off when hit badly but do not go much more than a hundred yards I went to a larger 17 there are a few good ones the 17VLR is the one i use, the new 17 Tac. and the 17-225 with Todds 30grbt Gold bullets his 29grbt works very well also.
If you read the other poast on Jims board we bring up what and how every one else needs any thing up to 50bmg to kill a wolf it is not true but just my thought on the subjuct but I have the wolves to back up what i say there are nine on that wall and that was the frist few weeks of last season I ended up in high dubble numbers when season was over and have been using the 17cal for over 5 years.
Sorry I forgot one of the questions no there is no felt recoil I am suer it will depend on the gun but if you are going to use a AR 15 style then no it will be in the 22 mag class mine is in a Choate stock with a 29 inch barrel on a 700 BDL action with a 1 in 9 twist
