I just traded for a sporterized M94. Hate seeing these old rifles sportered but someone else did it and I wanted a light rifle for the mountains.
Anyhow the barrel is just at 18 inches, actually just under I believe. Should I look at any specific powders to work best with the short barrel? I am wanting to use 120 and 140 grain bullets if I can get good accuracy with them.
I am thinking 120 for deer and general shooting and 140's for black bear here in Pa.

Mine were the long bbls chopped to 24 and 21". They were '96. Yours is an 1894 which had a 17.7" I believe, HANDY, but louder and will lower velocity in the small bore, but effective to around 300 yds or so. I'd put 4350 or 4831, but hear RL22 is great. With standard bullets I believe facts bear out that same powders working well in long bbls do it for short ones. Others believe go to a faster powder but I really don't think you will gain speed or accuracy with 120 or 140's by doing so. Enjoy slaying some PA deer and bear and post some stories!

6.5BR,
Thanks for the info and you are indeed correct on the 17.7 inch barrel. Ranges out to 300 yards is all I need out of this rifle, most likely only to 200. I practice out to 300 with all my rifles though. I keep both H4831 and IMR 4350 on hand so I can give them a try. I have also had good luck with IMR 7828 in my brothers .260 Rem.
I am thinking 140 grain Nosler Partitions would be great for bear.
