Of these two calibers, which will give me more speed? Does one have any other advantages over the other as far as case life, accuracy, and things of that nature are concerned? Thanks

according to reloadersnest.com, the middlestead is the #1 fastest loading on the site.....#2 is the 22-250 AI. Both were well over 5000fps. Barrel life is going to be a serious issue with either, so be sure to be cautious with strings, and dont over heat it. the 243 will have a bit of a capacity advantage. the AI would be easier to make cases for, should just be a resize and check the OAL. the 22-243 you will have to neck down, then resize, and trim a bit more. both are stupidly fast and flat cartridges

I have talked myself out of a Middlestead barrel so many times, but my curiosity keeps coming back to it...

I'd just have to get it thru my head it won't have a long accurate life cycle, unless I do a bull barrel I can keep trimming back and rechambering...

since you are thinking crazy... why not consider the 22/284...the barrel on that is good for about 5 boxes of bullets....

the 22.243 is good for about 7 boxes of bullets...

the 22.250 AI is good to at least 10 to 12 boxes of bullets...

that should give you some perspective...

As far as case life.. that is kind of like worrying about tread life on a racing tire...academically interesting but trivial in the real world...

I'd rack case life right along with the expense of barrel life...SHORT....

oh and I left out the 22TTH.. or the 22/6mm Rem... that is good for about 12 boxes of bullets as I am to understand by speaking to those that shoot them...

anyone of them will impress your shooting buddies tho!

Would case life be that bad on either though? Seeing as they're both pretty "improved" there should be very little case stretching...or is it more of a pressure issue?

I have a buddy with a 22-284....his opinion....next time he is just going to have a 22-250 reamed with a longer throat for the 80gr BLD bullets instead of a super hot 22

Why not combine your choices and go for the 22/243 improved?

22-243 Middlestead is basically a 243 AI case necked down to 22

If you're looking for the best tradjectory then I suggest you look to shooting the 55 grain Btips from the standard .243

Vapodog,

The 243 Winchester is what I settled on, after shooting a 220 Swift for years. 55gr bullets can easily be pushed to 4000fps, with the option to step up to heavier bullets when the wind is blowing the small pills around. The best of both worlds.

Having built both- I would favor the Middlested. The number one reason is tha anything the 22/250AI can do the Middlested can do a little better. So you can load the Middlested a little less than max and still = the 22/250AI. Making cases is not that difficult and the performance/accuracy of the fire forming load is almost a mirror of the next load. I have never had feeding problems with the Middlested but, occasionaly the AI case causes some minor gliches.Barrel life will vary with how you shoot the rifle. As a prairie dog rifle and a high rate of fire, neither will last very long. Shooting coyotes and other similar varmints you should be able to get 1500-2500 rounds before your field accuracy is gone.

I only wish I had discovered the amazing .243 years ago.....but the 55-58 grain bullets weren't always available.... They sure do a job on varmints.....and as you say,,,,,use a heavier bullet when the wind dictates!

I tried some of the 55's in my old .243 and honestly I got pretty eratic performance with velocity and accuracy. I was shooting factory ammo though, so that could have been it too. But I like the idea of using light for caliber pills zipping real fast for this kind of work. I'll be loading my 25wssm with 75's and 85's
