If I had to cut back to one, god forbid ,this one would stay. mid 50's Winchester mod 70 'Varminter' in .220 Swift. It is a little picky on pet ammo vs a late 70's Ruger tang safety 77V swift w a Douglas barrel but this gun has shot .25 at 100 and 1.25 at 300 with pet ammo, good glass ,perfect conditions and I was 'ON'

Years ago I sat for hours at a milling machine milling a 1 1/4" barrel blank into a half round half octagon barrel with a full length vented rib..........nothing added on....all integral. The round had two tapers and the octagon had three tapers..... I screwed it to a Sako L-461 and chambered it to a .222..........a short and light "window" gun. That gun still holds my prairie dog record with 39 consecutive hits.....the 40th shot hit a barbed wire fence and went astray! Years later I wanter a prettier gun and removed the barrel and restocked the little Sako in a piece of fancy claro and added a .223 barrel that I still use. So my favorite gun no longer exists.....maybe I'll resurrect it someday /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." You got to be a REAL master machinist doing that barrel! I learned to leave the hummer shooters alone, keep em clean and enjoy shooten em. A friend of mine was with me in the mid 90's when I bought a just out Win m,od 70 classic sporter BOSS on 06, mounted up a 3x9 vxll and sighted her in looking thru the barrel, adjusted the Boss to factory start point and Bingo. perfect cloverleaf, killed untold whitetails with that gun, My friend wanted it from day one so I sold it to him to buy another in Super Grade to match a Super Grade in .300 WM, The super Grade is beautiful BUT Ive yet to get it to shoot as good !

No way I could pick just one. My top 2 would be my AR for close to med range varmints and predators. The other the custom 25-06 I had built back in the early 90's. Hard to beat the 25-06 for long range medicine for varmints. Walk softly and carry a big bore!

Glad I don't have to settle for just one. However, my go to gun has become this Cooper Classic in 20 Tactical. I've killed varmints, hogs and deer with this rig. A beauty to look at and a joy to carry in the field. Flat trajectory and 1/2 moa accuracy. GWB

Win Poor, I have the identical rifle except chambered in 243. It wears a Unertl "Vulture" 10x scope and shoots 75gr Hdy HP to .5" @ 100 all day long. I like the 6mm better than the various 22s due to the wind conditions we experience around here. When the Winchester gets too hot, I switch to an old Savage 110V (manf in mid 70s), also in 243, that Kerry O'Day accurized for me. It shoots the same bullet but w/ 1/2 gr less H4350. Both rifles will consistently mess up a prairie rat at 350 yds and any rat within 500 yds is worried. I haven't tried the heavy (70+ gr) 22 bullets yet. They might work. But why buy a new rifle when the old 1s works so well. GW, That is one of the best looking Coopers Ive seen, Ive been wanting to take a Win Sporter Varmint in .223 rem in build a .20 Practical.I had one that was not a great shooter and traded it off !! Pancho,I have one in .243win as well and it will shoot .If I could have only one Dual porpose, Varmint, paper and Whitetails the .243 would be it. it shoot 58 gr stuff as well as 70 &95 gr ammo well with just a small elevation scope change. center gun .. three sweethearts, may be old technology but they will 'DO IT' I was shooting both the swift and .243 at 100yds, cannot remember who was what.

My original "walking varminter" is still my favorite; an original Browning Safari HB in .22-250 and wearing a Unertl 1 1/2" 12X. It still shoots 36 gr. Varmint Grenades under .5 MOA at over 4,100 fps.

Here is my walk about 6x47 a true 3/8" rifle, It is an H&R reworked and rebored custom. It is easy to carry and simple in its operation. It has a 1-12" twist. 24" octagon barrel. I use 58gr bullets at around 3500 ft. Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca

Zermel, Thankyou for that post. I like it. Did the for arm require any special attention, bedding or relieving?

My fave varmint rig got stolen out of my gun cabinet while I was away at college...a Remington model 700 BDL 22-250Rem with a Unertl 15x Ultra Varmint scope...it could shoot 52gr Sierra handloads into a 10 shot group a 100 yards that could be covered by a dime...and Remington aptly named it the Varmint Special. I liked it so much I had its name airbrushed onto my tailgate. I wonder who's been enjoying it for the last 29 years?

fourbore Yes the fore arm received a special bedding, too long here to explain. But you can find the whole process on my website. I have two rifles like that one above, the other one is in 257Roberts. A super accurate deer rifle. Handloading the H&R is another story. Most H&R owners that handload these rifles don't know how to do it and tune their rifles to get the best accuracy. Then H&R barrels are a crap shoot. Many of them do not shoot well enough to qualify for a varmint rifle. Hence a custom rebore job, expensive? yes but well worth it. Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca

A Rem. 700 223 with a 4-12 Simmons scope. I re-stocked it with a rollover pattern from Richards Micro Fit. Actually nothing about Richards fits but thats another story. It is not modified, except for trigger adjustment. It's not my most accurate gun it usually runs 3/4 inch to 1 1/8 inch but no matter how many you shoot the group never grows any bigger than 1 1/8. Its light enough to carry all day, I know where it shoots, the 1:12 twist stabilizes everything I have tried in it. It just feels real natural. DW

My current favorite. Not quite as accurate as my bolt guns but it's deadly on yotes. Walk softly and carry a big bore!

Mine is a XR 100 in 20 VarTarg with a 35gn berger at 3735fps and easily the most accurate rifle I have had. Von Gruff.

I got my first rifle in 1948-over the years got more. I enjoyed shooting and reloading all of them. I,m still looking for a favorite caliber. I have more bolt action rifles than pumps, lever, semi auto or falling block actions. Darn there are cartridges good for small varmints others for big varmints. There are heavy varmint and walk around rifles. For a old gun nut who likes them all ,dont ask to pick out a favorite
