6.5 Rem Mag - Hmmmmmmmmm...

Not that I NEED a 6.5 RM mind you...

I'm bumping around on auction sites for no particular reason, checking out rifles I really don't need, or can't afford. I decided "what the heck" to check out the Rem 673 line of rifles for the giggles of it and damned if the 6.5RM version isn't going for $450, NEW!

Now that price kinda stopped me. Looks aside (I have a 673 in .350 RM and I do like the looks) that's a helluva price on a very decent rifle. But really, I don't NEED a 6.5RM. I'm just a sucker for a deal.

I've already got a Bob in the safe...tossing 117's at 2750fps. What's the 6.5RM get me with another 10 grains of powder? A 140 at 2950fps? That's some improvement...but do I really need it? Deer don't get much deader hit with a Mack than they do with a Bob...

No, I'm pretty sure I'd need a 7mm, really. At least be able to go out to 175gr bullets if I really, really needed to.

Maybe if I didn't have the Bob it would make more sense...but then again, I intend to be buried with the Bob...

Anyone here ever take a deal, just because it appeared "too good"?

Regards,

Robert

The 6.5 Rem mag is a great round that was developed years ago. Its popularity was never high because Remington chambered it in a short action and it required bullets to be seated quite deeply in the case. Performance suffered. In a long action in comes very close to the 6.5/300WSM. The 673 is a nice comact rifle but I would have to get that picket fence off of the top of the barrel.

Probably only about 96% of the posters here on AR would buy a gun they didn't need just because it was a "good deal". The other 4% would, but can't because they're currently in bankruptcy from taking advantage of too many "good deals".

Stonecreek' Big Grin Big Grin

30378, Personally, I think that why the 6.5RM never made it, had a lot to do with the fact that it mostly chambered in very short barreled rifles, which couldn't take advantage of the ballistic capabilities of this round. I also think that because it was chambered in short action rifles, which then cause the bullets to be seated too deeply in the case of higher weight bullets, is something the vast majority of gun owners never even think of. Myself, I think of it, but don't really care. I think it is a "problem" that is way overblown, and is much less important than being able to shoot a high performance load in a short action. For instance, I love 257 Roberts rifles in short actions, contrary to what many way smarter people than me say. I also would love it if Remington would see fit to chamber a 700 CDL SF in 6.5RM, with a 24" barrel, and a short action, of course!! But I may have to make do with a 260!! Big Grin Big Grin

Better yet, would be if they would bring back the original 700 Mountain Rifle in both .257 Roberts and 6.5 RM, both shorties, thank you!

I just recently got back a rebarreled action in 6.5 rem mag. I have only shot it once so I really can't tell you what it is capable of yet. What I did was to take a 300 win mag that had a short magazine and could not be loaded to the lands and make it a 6.5 rem mag that can be seated way out and not take up case capacity.

These bullets are loaded where the base of a 130 gr Accubond is seated halfway down the shoulder

Work in progress. More later.

Zanders wholesale has the Remington 673 in 6.5 Rem Mag on sale and as much as I like 6.5mm cartridges, I don't like that damned rib, the shark fin front sight, or the geometry of the pistol grip on that stock, so count me out.

I can't tolerate the 673 either. An original Mountain Rifle chambered in 6.5RM, or the CDL SF, both in short action, would have me scrambling! Big Grin

It's funny, one of the reasons I do like the rifle is as a "loaner" gun. My Dad is big into deep sea fishing and doesn't own any firearms. I don't particularly think this is a bad thing - he doesn't take that great of care with his gear! But damned for sure I am NOT going to ever loan him my Bob for a hunting trip!

The 673 would make a fine "loaner" rifle that I wouldn't lose much sleep over if it picked up a few dings.

As to the other comments: 100%, I'd love to find a 6.5 in a long action with a smooth barrel - a much better tool. But then, I wouldn't want to loan THAT out either! rotflmo

Robert
