For those interested...

Range Report: 22.250 and 80 grain Match bullets
Firearm Used: Ruger 77 Mk2
Barrel: 24 inch Stainless Pac Nor, one in 7 twist, Heavy Magnum Coutour…
Scope: Simmons 6.5 x 20 x 50mm
Bullets Used: Berger 80 grain Match
Primer Used: CCI Large Rifle
Range tested 100 yds..

This test was comprised of using 33 different powders from Hodgdon, IMR , Alliant, Accurate Arms and Winchester.

The following loads showed the tightest groups by a fair margin, and are put forth as points of references and good places to start at..

All groups could be covered with a nickel at 100 yds, or smaller in size…

Most accurate groups are highlighted, and in no particular order in ratio to group size.

1. H 4831SC/ 37.5 grs…
2. RL 25/ 40 grs
3. H 4350/ 35 grs: one hole at 100 yds.
4. IMR 4350/ 35 grs
5. IMR 4320/ 30 grs: one hole @ 100 yds
6. RL 15/ 30 grs: one hole at 100 yds
7. Varget/ 30 grs: one hole @ 100 yds
8. H 4895/ 30 grs: one hole @ 100 yds
9. Benchmark: 27.5 grs: one hole @ 100 yds
10. IMR 4895/ 30 grs:
11. BLC2/ 30 grs/
12. AA 2230/30 grs
13. IMR 4831/ 37.5 grs… one very small hole at 100 yds.. tied with smallest group
14. H 322/ 28 grs.. tied for smallest group at 100 yds, with smallest group

Both the last two loads showed little holes that were 0.4465 inches according to my micrometer…
Minus the .224 bore diameter of the bullet, that would make a group size of 0.2225 at 100 yds…

All loads were shot from a benchrest position.
Scope was set on 10 power for each 3 shot volley.

I also wish to thank Roger Bartsche for supplying a nice stock of 80 grain Bergers for this test.. it was his inspiration that I did this test..

Cheers

Blair,
I still don't think you'd gain much out of a 22/06.. but a fast twist barrel on that 22/243 Middlestead would be interesting...

I could crank up the velocity on all of those loads, but the bullet seems to perform the best in the 2900 to 3000 fps range.....

faster than that, and the groups opened up in almost ALL instances...

the difference in the H 322 load was amazing.. at 27.5 grains, I got a 1.5 inch group.. at 28 grains it gave me the above group of .2225!..

All of the other powders with the exception of IMR 4831 gave similar results...of course that had to do with the change in velocity of the bullets...
