Do you guys have any loads for the 220 Swift that will send a 40grain bullet above 5000ftps.?Huh?

Just glancing at the published loads there are none above 4300 fps. The bullets might start to melt or fly apart at some point. I suppose a better bullet could be found to avoid this.

The Swift is a magnificent cartridge.

There are some loads on the reloading pages on this site that push a 35g Berger bullet over 5000 in a Swift. BA

I have pushed a 50 gr. bullet over 4200 fps. And I might add, safley too! John.

I shoot the 40grn. Barnes XLC @ 4700fps..Im on my 3rd reload with these cases, so pressure is not a problem.I think I can go more, but am so dazzled at those speeds I just quit there..50 grn Sierra's at 4350fps.She's a real shooter..

Just move down to a lighter bullet. I used to swage my own .224 bullets and made bullets as light as 26 grains.

HOWEVER I was building these bullets for a .22 K Hornet and they would never get near this velocity. But going down to a lighter bullet, it could be done. No guarantee about what you'll have when you get there. Most likely poor accuaracy and a VERY fragile projectile that will explode on impact with anything.

You might be able to do this with a lighter bullet made of solid material, like a Barnes X. But, a regular jacketed slug would blow up in the air, probably upon exiting the bore, just like the early 48-grain slugs often did when the .220 was first introduced.

The ones listed on the site we are ON now,are the closest I have found researching the 220 Swift loads. Waiting for a 700 VSSF to arrive in 220 Swift.

NEW here, dont beat me too bad. Not new to loading and have LITTLE plans to REALLY push the 220 when loading but it does make for interesting reading. My car has more horsepower than I NORMALLY use, but it's nice to know it's there if I want.

FYI.......the only one AT 5000 was a 35 grain, not 40 here. Also in a 40x with 27 inch barrel.

More interested myself in what powders to use to get good velocity, excellent accuracy, and lower pressures. Replacing a fluted SS barrel sounds like something I NEVER wanna do!!

Always had a "yen" for a swift. Older now and found one to try out. One less " I WANNA".

I would look at RL-7 and start on the lower end and work up to the max for your rifle. I've ben using this in my 223 and getting velocities safely that nobody says can be reached. Let us know how it works out for you sound like an exciting project.

I've ran a 22.250 with a 40 grain BK to 4750 fps..primer pocket life was a little short.. at 2 shots...

however, in a Swift or 22.250 AI, the powder I'd suggest over RL 7, would be RL10.. I think it would do just a hair better in the larger case....

I've been known to be wrong.. but have also been known to speculate correctly also...

I'd try both myself...I have been thinking about doing a Swift, just to be able to play with it...

My problem is my play list and my budget have this major gap between the two.. and at $4.25 per gallon of fuel.. it is getting further apart....

4000 FPS is pretty rough on barrels and serves no purpose, in fact it is counter productive unless you buy your barrels at wall mart by the gross ton...I never could get safe pressures, reasonable case life, beyond 3750 FPS, but never felt the need to...I love the 220 swift caliber btw, its a rock chuck killing machine.
