I have a Savage 110FP with a 24" barrel and 9" twist. I see that the recommended bullet weight is up to 73 gr., but was curious if it would adequately stabalize a 75gr. bullet given the small difference. Was looking at either the 75 gr Hornady BTHP, or an A-Max. Anyone tried this yet?

My Savage stabilizes the 68, 69, 75, 77 and 80 grain bullets just fine! some loads with the 80s down in the 0.2 and 0.3 ranges!

12 BVSS with the one in 9....

don't bother trying Hornady's SPSXs tho.. they will vaporize right out of the barrel unless Mv is slowed to about 2500 fps or less!

Have the same rifle and I tried the 75 a-max for the first time last week they shot pretty good for me.I had some more loaded up and was at the range this morning but ran out of time before I got to try them again.I did shoot one group at 300 yds(.903) with the 69 gr useing the H322,had been useing 25 grs of R-15 with them and now both powders do good for me with the 69 gr sierra's.
I got the loads posted below from a members post on here so you may want to try them in your 10 fp.

Owensby, I am actually running up some tests on the 75gr. HPBT's right now but have some A-Max's coming in. What OAL are you using on these loads? I have some H4895 and will try this out.

Edited to add, I ask the OAL for info purposes only and know not to load to this figure

I have a 12BVSS which shoots 75 Hornady HPBT Match and 75 grain AMAX bullets great! I use Varget and seat .005 off the rifling using a Stoney Point gauge. 69 Sierra Match Kings are also great. I think the heavy bullets, 60 grains plus, shoot better than the lightweight bullets 50's, 52's, and 55's.

My 223s with the fast twist and My 22.250 with the 1 in 8, all shoot the 75 grain HP match Hornady better than they do the A Max... the AMax is no slouch, it is just the HPMatch is even better!

Hi 2 Alpha,
I have a 223 Rem 700LTR 9" twist, 20 "long barrel and it stabilises projectiles up to the 80gn Sierra and loves the 75 A-Max, Velocity in my barrel is 2880fps avg.Smallest group so far is .192 but it easily shoots .5, I would just give it a go. The 75A-Max is fantasic in the feild, and has almost 50% more energy at 300yds than a 22/250 52gn projectile started at 3800fps.Drop at 300yds is 8" in 223 while the 52gn from a 22/250 drops aprox 3", drift is less for the 223 75 A-Max

I picked up some 75gr. A-Max's and just finished loading up a few test batches. H-4895 at 23.5, 24 and 24.5 gr. I finally got the Hornady OAL gauge and my Savage seems to be a 2.520 OAL. I loaded 2 test batches, one at 2.510 OAL and one at 2.500 OAL. Will have to get out this weekend and see how they fare. Thanks to all for the input.

Well, got to say I am impressed with the A-Max's! I got my best grouping so far with this rifle, .75 MOA. I had one flier in the group otherwise it would have been .45. Will have to play around a bit with the OAL to see if I can tweak some more out of this.

Owensby, yeah, the H4895 and the 75gr BTHP was not a good combo for me either. Going to have to see about getting some Varget, that is a nice grouping. Seems Varget loves the heavier bullet weights more than H4895.
