What are the benifits of having a .30-338 over a .300wm?

Longer neck for better purchase on longer bullets. The 338 and 264 Win's have their shoulders a wee bit back and longer necks then the 300 Win Mag. It gives the 300 a negligible increase in powder (like 1-2%) But, it also made it different from the 308 Norma Mag which came out first and is basically an identical twin of the 30-338. Remington offered it from the Custom Shop for a while.

I own a 308Norma (basically a 30-338) and load for a buddies 300Wmag. While I don't care for the short neck it has never caused a problem at least up through 200gr Part. My 308 gives up about 50fps to the 300wmag I load for at least for accuracy loads with 180s. In 165 and lower it gives up basically nothing.

A 30-338 will not have factory ammo available and dies will likely cost more. If you want something different go for it but I view it as spending money for no gain and most likely a loss. I built my 308N simply to be different and sit next to my 358Norma in the safe.

If you do decide to build one you can use 308 Norma load data.

As usual just my $.02

if you were building a long range target rifle in 300 mag, then the norma or 30-338 would be a good choice so you could have a more consistent and better hold on 200+ grain target bullets. Otherwise like Ramrod said....you are paying more for a loss in performance. If you wanna pay more for less, go 300 H&H, the rifle will cost more but at least you can get factory brass, ammo and dies.

Given the readily available brass and ammo for the 300 WM the 30-338 offers no tangible benefit, just disadvantages. The 300 WM is extremely accurate round and has won many 1000 yd competitions. I LOVE my 300 WM - its awesome with targets and on big game. I have many one shot kills on big bull elk. Regards, AIU

I shoot the 30-338 and love it. Brass is easy to make by necking down 338 brass. Mine has a 12 pitch barrel. For antelope the 150 gr Nosler BT screams out of the tube at 3571 FPS, shoots 3/4 inch groups. It out runs my 7 MM STW 140 GR BTs. I've had many thoughts about re chambering the Hart 26 inch tube to 300 RUM but it will never happen. I'll get another tube for that project and keep the 30-338. In my book it rules. JMHO. coffee
