anyone have an idea for a very fast "over 4500" 22 cal based on a 30-06 action 22-06 or somethin of the sort barrel life and data reamer availability and so on?

CH-4D lists several variants of .22-06 dies. This is surely an older wildcat, so Clymer likely has the reamer specs on hand to match these. Ask CH-4D or RCBS about their dies. They usually know where the matching reamer can be found.

The Powley Computer indicates even light, 40 gn bullets will need to use a powder as slow as 4320, or so, but this sort of case and SD combination is well out of the "sweet spot" for the old Powley.

QuickLOAD suggests 4895 would be a better choice, but 4500 fps would be over max pressure even with the 40 gn bullets (assuming those light bullets will hold together at that rpm). QL also has problems with such "over-bore" cases. Really, do you need more than the Swift provides?

To try to reduce erosion, you might consider Powley's advice to keep the pressures down around 45,000 CUP. You should be able to get Swift performance with the large case at those pressures.

I have a swift and like it fine just looking for something different heard about this in africa and thought it would be way overbore and claims of over 4500 fps sounded off to me but ?

it had some metric desig. 5.56x65 or some such
just wondering if anyone had tried it.

Well I wouldn't get to attached to a barrel because you won't have it long. I took basically a 280Gibbs and necked it down to 243. Trying to shoot light bullets very fast. After just a few hunderd rounds the throat was being eaten away. SS barrel and keeping it cool didn't help much. I pulled it after just a little over a 1000rds groups had opened by 100%.

If you really want something like that. Go stainless with a long shank or better yet straight barrel so you can set it back several times.

Wouldn't a 280Gibbs necked down to 243 be a 240Gibbs?

WinkYep you are correct. I figured some might not know the 240 Gibbs was a blown out 06 case so I used the 280Gibbs as a size reference.

I have my own wildcat case based on a 280Rem. The shoulder is moved forward, little less taper than the Gibbs and it has a 40deg shoulder. It holds a couple grains more powder. I necked it down to 243 and stamped the barrel 240PDK. Yep my initials.

When you are that overbore an extra couple of grains of powder won't matter. Even a 22-06 the barrel won't last long. Just my opinion.

I was using a 55gr 243 bullet 26" barrel and 55grs of 4895 gave me 4250fps. Between 800 and 1000 the groups opened up from 5/8" to 1.25". The barrel was never allowed to get hot enough that I couldn't hold my hand on it. The throat was set up for the bullet I was using. It had eroded enough that I could no long reach the lands and keep the bullet in the case.

I would question if you could reach 4500 with slow powders even from a 30". Like I said start out with your barrel made so you can set it back several times. The riflings will be fine the throat goes away.
