i'm looking for a medium speed load for my dad's 30-284 and 30-284 data is a little hard to find. it seems that i read somwhere that the 284 case and the 30-06 case have the same capacity so i should be able to use 30-06 data to load the 284 case necked up to .308. starting low and working up of course. is this correct? thanks

You're correct when you say that the 30-284 is similar to the 30-06 in capacity but that's a general statement only. Original Winchester 284 brass may have a different capacity than the newer 6.5/284 brass necked to 30 caliber. Your best bet would be to actually measure the H2O capacity of the brass you will be using compared with a couple of brands of 30-06. Depending on the magazine length, deep seating of bullets in a 30-284 case could change things a lot also.

But, if you don't want to do all that work your approach of using 06 data and starting low would work too. Or, get a copy of Vol II of Ackley's Handbook and you'll find a couple of pages of his loads for the 30-284.

I use a load of 54.g/4350 I believe I started out at 51 grains, this is using a 180 grain bullet. Which works out pretty close to within a half a grain of my favorite 30.06 load. I have seen quickload figures of around 56-57 but never tried them, I just stopped at a reliable accurate load, for me anyway. So I would say 54g is a good mid range load. hth

thanks guys. i'l start with the minimum 3006 load and work my way up to something middle of the road. i'm just looking for a user friendly load so i won't even approach any pressure problems.

Look at 7.5 x 55 swiss, because they are close to one in the same. To make 7.5 Swiss brass all you do is neck up .284 win brass. Many reload manuals have data for this.

I'd agree with this post by yellowhammer.

I have tried 57.5 grains of H-4831 with 180 gr, bullets in my .30/.284, and it was the producer of many 1/2 MOA groups...from a M88 Winchester!!

But I wouldn't go that high without carefully working the load up in .5 grain increments, and would stop at a lower loading, and drop it back some, if any pressure signs at all suggested I should.

BTW, I would not use any of Ackley's data from his early books, for any cartridge. Much of it is far too hot for many guns. P.O. was a good friend, but his loading data was something I learned very early on not to go by. Some guns may do all right with it, but many will not...at least that has been my experience with it.

thanks again for all the responses. i'm going this weekend to shoot some loads with a 165 grn bullet and powder charges from 52-57.5 grns of IMR4350. i'm not looking for any hyper speed so i doubt that i'll go any higher than 57.5 and may even settle on a charge less than that.

again...thanks

The last 30-284 I had went to a gent in Texas, it was Savage M-99F, that a local gunsmith of sorts had ruined the .308 chamber with a screwdriver tryin to get a stuck cas out of it.
He got sued, had to buy the owner a new rifle and I bought the gun cheap, rechambered it to a 284 case, custom stocked it and it turned out to be a real neat rifle...I shot 06 loads or 4350 and 4320 cut back 2 grs. in the Savage and it worked fine. I got 2600 FPS plus a little with the 180 gr. bullets and almost 2800 FPS with 165 gr. bullets as I recall. Was it that much better than a .308, probably not....

Hodgdon #25 Manual (circa 1987) shows .30-06 & .30-.284 under the same listing. You can pretty much use data interchangably.
