I've got a Remington 788 with the.473 bolt face that I have to do something with. What do you guys think about a 22BR necked down to 20 caliber?
Does anyone have the case capacity of the 222 Rem Mag and the 22 Benchrest handy to compare?

good thinking.....and I don't have specific data I have done enough looking to tell you that that's gonna move a .204 very nicely.....
Unfortunately expensive for custom reamers, dies et al.....but it;ll work quite well IMO.....I believe the case capacity of the .22 BR is slightly larger.....but close enough to be a winner....

The sad news is of course it'll cost less to sell the 788 as is and buy a .204 Ruger in a savage rifle....or other.....but that's no fun at all!!!

I think it's called the 20 Vartag.

I have built several 20 BR rifles for PD hunters and they really shoot. I see that Sierra is on the scene with their new 20 Cal. bullets.PD's beware.

Eddie, Do you have a reamer and source of dies for this?

Thanks Bartsche!

Vapo, yep I could just buy a 204 barrel for one of my other Savages but then I'd still have the 788 to do another project with! Then I'd come back in here asking you guys about another brilliant idea of mine that someone else figured out years ago!

For the source of all wisdom and knowledge about the .20 caliber, contact Todd Kindler at The Woodchuck Den. He's also the editor of "Small Caliber News" and was largely responsible for resurrecting the .20. There's a web site: www.woodchuckden.com. What Todd doesn't know about 20s isn't worth knowing.

the vartarg is a 221 fireball case. the 20br is a sick little round. ifn' your looking for info you can also contact greg tannel at gre-tan. he is a guru at the small stuff and will talk your ear off. he is a great guy and will answer all the questions you didn't know you had.
he is also building some of the best hardware. reasonable prices. he told me right now the bullets haven't caught up to the popularity of the 20 cal. he has sent them over 5000fps but they are not staying together! the br needs a 30" tube to get the most. the 204 and 20tac are using a 26". 12 twist for the 30's, 11 twist for the 40's and 10 for the 50's. the factory barrels are mostly 12.
he also noted that in current form the 20tac is the way to go because of better brass available. the 204 will exceed it when brass gets better.
i think the price was $700 and and your action for a COMPLETELY blueprinted action and a ss lilja, lothar whatever you want barrel installed. good deal in my book.
he and todd are on the same page... http://www.gtrtooling.com
check it out............
