Are you sure your friend doesn't have a 416 Taylor. Or maybe a 375 Taylor. These are the 338 Win Mag necked up to a 375 or 416 developed by Robert Chatfield-Taylor. He developed the 416 in 1972 I believe. I'm not sure about the 375. I have no idea what a 338 Taylor is.

If it si truely a 338 Taylor?, your basically dealing with a 338 Win Mag with very little difference. As the others have wisely stated, make sure you know what chamber you have before you even try to load it. Have a case made of your chamber if nothing else, I do this pretty cheap in my gunsmithing shop and it is easy to figure out what you are dealing with. Better to be safe and have to wait a little bit then guess and be real sorry. Good Shooting!!! 50

I called up to Bozman and found out that the rifle is a Mdl. 70 Win. SS barrel, comp stock. 338 Taylor is stamped on the left side of the barrel. A set of custom reloading dies came with the rifle. He has fired 338Win. Mag.ammo in the rifle to fire form the cases. One reload he has is 78.0 Gr. 4350 IMR with a 210 Gr.Nosler Part bullet. Thats five Gr. over max in a 338 Win Mag. and 5.5 Gr. less than the max load for the 340 Weatherby. Next time he comes down to Nebr. I can run a chamber cast and find out a bit more about the rifle. Thanks for the input. Some time ago I read about Taylor but dont remember the source. Over the years I, collected about 150 book + on shooting and hunting.I,d like to get a book that has the Taylor rifle cases in it.What ever, it should be a good Elk rifle.

I have used and shot several Chatfield-Taylors over the years as many years ago there was a need for such calibers, today that isn't the case... I shot the 375 CT and it duplicated the 375 H&H fully...The 416 Taylor ran about 50 to 75 FPS behind a 416 Rem and at a little higher pressure it seemed to me... To be a real Taylor it had to be a 338 Win necked up to something, that was his "thang"...A .338 Imp. such as you describe is about as usefull as tits on a boar hog..you might pick up 50 to 75 FPS and have a wildcat to deal with.
