I have seen the M1 carbine rebarreled to shoot a rimless version of the .38/40 WCF cartridge, and it would fire a 200-grain bullet at 2200 FPS MV with improved accuracy. Your idea is not too bad! You could probably convert one to the 7.62X39mm, or to the .308X1.5" Barnes.....

Many thanks for the compliment. Regarding the 7.62x39 or 308x1.5, problem is COL. The x39 has 2.15" COL, whereas the Carbine will only accept 1.65" ... it would have to be the 30 Kurz for the platform in question. A longer version of the 38/45 Hard Head would be an idea, but the challenge is getting magazines to work. Now, the 38/45 itself, in the Grease Gun, there is another thought ....

Here's something else a little loony to do with an M1 Carb. I got ahold of one that had been mangled in an effort to customize it, so I decided to play a bit. I ordered a 1 in 8 barrel blank and machined it to fit, leaving it at 161/4" in length. I started loading some 220gr smk's for it with 12gr of 4227 behind it. I get roughly the same performance as the 300/221 whisper in my safe. Most importantly, I am getting repeatable 2" groups at 300m, at about 1050fps. I had a hankerin' for another useless subsonic gun I guess.

Just wondering, can the 30 carbine take the pressure of a short 308? I recall in some old Guns & Ammo or Shooting Times rags an article about a 5.7 (?) Johnson. Anyone else? When my daughter moves out at the end of the month, I might be able to access them and post the specs.

If it'll work in a Grease Gun mag, it'll work on an AR-15 platform, the new Cav Arms lowers are wide enough to accept the mags, and there are several companies working on .45 ACP uppers and mag blocks.
