dose anybody know of shells like 7mm-357max or a 7mm-445 Supper mag. I think the cases would hold about the right amount of powder for a 10" Contender, and them being rimed would be better in the Contender

Necking down this far causes a lot of case work. Why not just go with a 7-30 Waters?

7mm-.357 Max sounds like fun. How about the .225 or .256 Winchester necked up?

handcanon,
Yes ,there is the .280 CHEAPSKATE.It can either be built rimmed or rimless.
Rimmed cases can be made from the .303 British
or.445 SUPER MAG.Rimless is made from the .35 Rem.
The water capacity for the .30 CHEAPSKATE is 34.14grs so the .280 CHEAPSKATE is a bit more.
The case body is cut with the .280 Rem. reamer.
The rim recess is cut with a piloted counterbore or singlepoint lathe tool.
Length to shoulder is 1.100",shoulder dia.is
.442",shoulder angle is 17 degrees 15 minutes.
Dies are made by grinding the base from the .280 Rem. FL die.
I have made the .30 and .25 CHEAPSKATES so far,
The .30 CHEAPSKATE was built using the shortened .30-06 chamber, the .25 using the .25-06 chamber.
I plan on making the whole series of CHEAPSKATES
as I get the time and money.
The series consists of the;.22{.22-06},6MM-06
{6MM-6},.25{.25-06},6.5-06{6.5-06},.270{.270 Win.}
.280{.280 Rem.},.30{.30-06},8MM{8MM-06},.338{.338-06},and .35{.35 Whelen.}.Reamers used are in {}for
caliber listed.Dies can be made by grinding the bases on the corresponding FL die.
Also there is the 7MM PPC which can be made rimmed with the .220 SWIFT case.
The CHEAPSKATE series was designed primarily to
use Remington takeoff barrels by shortening the chamber and fitting to a small ring Mauser ,SMLE,
or single shot action.
Considerable savings can be realized by the person whom is able to do his own work.
Takeoff barrels can often be purchased for 35-50 dollars new. They are already chambered and only need to be shortened on the breech end and fitted to the action.

Handcannon, the 7mmX357max is called the 7mm Supermag, you use 7mm TCU Dies and the case comes out with a really short neck after fireforming, just use 7mm TCU load data and work up. I picked up a 10" T/C barrel NIB about 3 years from a place in Texas for $79.95, the company(name escapes me) was one of those that offers closeout products.

handcanon,
I will answer on the forum as someone else may have an interest in these wildcats.
My .30 CHEAPSKATE has a 12" barrel and is built
as a press fit liner in a 12ga. shotgun.I counterbored the rim recess on a lathe, which could be done on a Contender barrel.
I shortened a 30-06 die and made several rimless cases{.35 REM.}to use for headspacing, then faced the breech end of the 30-06
till it was flush with the head of the case.I then counterbored the chamber to use the .303 British case{rim thickness+.002".I fit the barrel to the 12ga barrel with .0002"press,with the rest
of the barrel turned .001" under bore size{.728}.
Though I have not done a Contender, the application is very similiar.
A .280 or .270 CHEAPSKATE might make a good Contender cartridge.
I designed the CHEAPSKATES primarily to shoot
cast bullets as the throats on the 06 based cartridges are long allowing heavy bullets. With
lighter bullets the .30 CHEAPSKATE will about equal the .30 HERRETT in performance.
I have 35 years experience in machine and tool and die shops, but I believe any good machinest could duplicate my efforts.
I headspace on the shoulder and have used both .303 Br. and .35 REM.cases in this gun.I formed one case from .445 SUPER MAG and fired it about 20 times. With .35 REM. and .303 Br.brass you must neck ream.I have quite a bit of .35 REM. and .303 Br.so that is what I'm using as .445 SUPER MAG. brass is expensive.
