It may sound like a dumb ? but I'm new at this. Just doing my first wildcat now---- (7mm/300 win mag) If it is a short action. I was wondering if there would be any problems rechambering a .260 Rem to a 6.5-284 Thanks

It depends on which "short" action you have. For me, it is too long in a Rem. M700SA. The round really needs a M98 or long action (LOA 3.1" min.)to take advantage of the increased powder cap. I went to a .260AI on my M700SA. I'll have it up & running in a few weeks. Stay tuned.

let me help you.. neck down the 7 wsm ... or just use the 7wsm, and be done with it the 284, while a great round, is just not the monster the wsm would be jeffe

I believe the Norma factory version is a standard/'06 lenglth cartridge so as to take full advantage of case capacity. It's a popular cartridge for competition target shooting.

zno Leo, the 6,5x284 Norma is just the 6.5x.284 to their specs. It's not a full length 06 case. To me, the 6.5x.284 should be on a med. or std. action so you can COL out to 3.1-3.3.

If a 25-284 can be done in a short-action Rem (2.8ish inches COL), I don't see why a 6.5-284 won't work. I think a 140 Gr. XLC at 2800+ fps with a PBR of about 228 yards would take just about any big critter. And a 95 Gr VMAX at 3300+ fps with a PBR of about 255 yards should reach out and take any small critter. Then you got the 120 Gr. Ballistic Tip at 3100 fps to take care of anything in between. All done on Quickload software using a 22" barrel length and loaded to a COL of 2.815" to fit in a Rem 700 SA magazine. I think if you're going to use a long-action in a 6.5 caliber for a rifle with hunting on the agenda, I'd opt for a 6.5-06 or a 6.5-06 AI. I don't have any experience with the 6.5-284, but I have a 25-284 based on a Rem 700 SA that will make them hummmmmmmm!

Quote: I fail to really understand why we feel the 6.5x284 neeeds to be loaded with the bullet out to a point we need a long action for it. The win M70 with its` 3.15 short action is plenty IMO, and I`m not sure we really gain by useing it. Nosler in their # 5 edition list loads for the 6.5x284 with a OAL of 3.310 -SAAMI / CIP (?) max for the Norma round- as haveing a load density of 80% to 90% for max loads with a 140 Partition. If max loads at this lenght leaves air space how do we gain loading longer? If we load shorter how much do we have to drop to get to a 100% density load? How about if we have a bit of compression? Does anyone have any data out there showing how much gain or loss there is when we stretch the OAL? What`s the max same pressure load with say R22 in a load at 2.85 vs 3.30? What`s the vel differance? Does anyone have any ideas or answers
