I am new to any type of wild cat and long range shooting. I am considering a rifle in 6.5 x 284 winchester. I am also considering this configuration for an encore rifle for my son. Any suggestions on this or other choices. Can anyone explain the difference between the winchester and the norma 6.5 x284? Thanks George K

First off, I'm not sure if the 6.5-284 is a wildcat anymore. Is it? Dies are easily bought and brass ready made, does someone sell loaded ammo? Anyway, it's a fine cartridge, good long range cartridge and is seeing a big following in the long range benchrest games. No real difference bewtween the Winchester and Norma except the brass size. If you are having a tight/match chamber cut, you'll have to decide which brass you'll use, the Winchester being a little bigger on the head end.

The 6.5x.284 is almost a factory round, just factory rifles aren't made. It's a good round in a med. or std. action. It's too long over all for a short action. With 120-140gr bullets it's a great deer size game round. Recoil is very light, about like a .243 but kills much better. If you are having one made, spec. the Norma. Factory brass is available from Norma & Hornady. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

Gentlemen To my knowledge ammo is made by Norma and cases is available from Norma, Lapua and Hornady Norma standardised and CIP approved it. Cheers / JOHAN

Here is a 6.5X284 that I really like. It's a Bat action with a Kreiger barrel. The 284 case has a rebated rim. Not sure if that would work in an Encore. Join the NRA
