Converting an 8mm mag to 325 (8mm) RUM would be very easy...just a small clean up on the chamber with a 300 RUM reamer and then an 8mm throating job. It would fall neatly between the 300 and 338 RUM, giving 4800 FPE from 110 grs of uasble case capacity. Bullet selection is good, and getting better all the time.

It would also make the 300 RUM a bit less overbore, and help with bbl life...about like a 7mm Mag. The big 250 gr Woodleigh would cut usable capacity to around 106 grs, for 4675 FPE and 2900 fps with a sectional density of .342, but the all purpose bullet would be a 200 grainer at 3286 fps.

That dang near floats my boat...

I hope you build one thumb Personally I think 27-28 inch barrel would be nice. It should be no match to get a 220 grain bullet over 3150 fps with a longer barrel. The recoil would be quite exciting Roll Eyes Razzer

DWM made 8X70 or 8X73(not sure, now) based on 404 Jeffery case around 1920 or so..

Sabot,
Shut up! I've just put the 8mmRemMag into the 'smith for a new 26" barrel, I don't need these distractions, ideas or suggestions! Magazine box may also need replacement for the fat cartridges.
Cheers...

Con....you'll like the 26" barrel on the 8mm Mag. With real slow powder (ie, Retumbo, RL25, AA8700), it seems to give an extra 70 - 100 fps over the factory 24".

Glad you posted that, Lee. I have a Pac Nor setting here waiting for me to get around to fitting it. It's going on a Model 70, and will be finished at 26 inches in 8mm Mag

I am hoping to get 100 fps over my 24" 700 Classic.

McCray.....I built mine on a Model 70 too (all stainless, synthetic stock, V-16 Weaver glass, and 26" Shilen barrel). I've tried a lot of different reloads, but it seems to like Retumbo and Sierra's 220 GameKing the best.

Lee,
Don't leave me hanging... exactly what velocities are you getting? I bought my Rem700 second-hand with a shortened (23") barrel and after the first 15 rounds put it straight into the 'smith. I've got a box of factory 220gr which are rated at 2800fps, but keep reading of near 3000fps velocity out of reloads with a 220gr. The 8mmRemMag has more case capacity than a 300WinMag but factory loads with the old 185gr seem in line with 300WinMag 180gr loads, ie around 3000fps. I feel that the 8mmRemMag may be underloaded a little by the factory, but have nothing to base that on other than a whoppping big case and published velocities that seem more in line with a 300WinMag. Personally I'll be happy with a high 2800s to mid 2900s with the 220gr Hornady/Sierra, and ecstatic with near 3000fps. Also need to find a premium 200gr for my purposes, any suggestions?
Cheers...

Con....I've been able to get just over 3,000 fps with 88.0 grains of Retumbo under the 220 GameKing. With a 185 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, 91.0 grs of RL25 will do about 3,200 fps. I do consider both of these to be max, so work up to them incrementally.
