30BR - in a hunting rifle.
Has anyone put together a 30BR as a hunting/kids rifle rather than a pure benchrest stick? Is it nuts to have a perfectly good Sportsman 78 (Rem700ADL clone) in .308 rechambered to 30BR? Thinking a 110grV-Max and 125gr Nosler BT would be great fun, small case capacity should suit cast projectiles ... and its different!!

There's no reason to restrict yourself to the very light bullets or cast bullets. Properly loaded in a good bolt action rifle you should be able to come very close to duplicating 30-30 ballistics, maybe even exceed them. After all, the 30 BR is nothing more than the old wildcat 308 x 1.5". JMHO

beerFurthering Cheechako's line of thought; I have a deep throated 7.62 X 41 ( .308 X 1.625) and at the muzzle it safely duplicates 30-30 performance. Using standard pointed, spire, or psp bullets it stretches the usefull range out perhaps 75 yds.

The thing is if your .308 delivers reasonable accuracy why not just load it down? If the answer is that you want to have a little fun with something new and different and don't mind the expence and head aches, I can understand that. Roll Eyesroger

Lads ... I prefer to think of the wildcat forum as a place for the freestyle expression of our individual souls. The new Stevens 200 in .308Win is for the downloading, the S/H Sportsman 78 for a 30BR (with plans to possibly rebuild it later as an informal benchrest gun), whilst the 17Rem will become a 300Whisper. Three rifles where only one is required really pissers our Federal Govt and the UN off clap which is always a bonus.
Seriously though ... looking at the rechamber as a cheapish way to get to know the cartridge before committing to a rebuild.

I think my 7BR model 7 custom is different, and so does everyone who sees it and the cartridge.

120's at 2878......very surprising what it can do and how accurate, with mild recoil, blast, and so efficient on powder.

At the range, you can shoot more rounds without barrel heating up......really nice.

Take a look at the 7BR for those bullet weights.
