The square shoulder case had a name which slips my mind right now, but the problem with too straight a square historically is best explained by saying anytime you put a crease in metal or anything else I suspect, then that becomes the stress point and prone to failure....The Venturi shoulder seems to be about the most a brass case will tolerate or so I have read....
