Just wondering if anyone has necked the 9,3X62 down to .338 for a bit more case capacity than the more common .338-06. This has likely been Ackleyed already, but thought I would ask.

The Hawke cartriges are based on the 62's shape. He simply changed to 06 brass to make it easier to optain brass.

I shoot a 340PDK. On the left with the 280PDK and parent. It is 280Rem brass blown out to .46 at the shoulder. Shoulder starts at 2.18" and is 40deg. Can't get much more capacity than this even from 62 brass. With a 24" it will match factory 338wmag for 225s and less and my own handloads when the 338wmag spots it 2" of barrel. Will it kill better than the 338-06 probably not.

Figured it had been done. Most things have.

The 338 Scovill is pretty close as well.

Also a close match to the 338 Sabi which is popular in South Africa. Here the cartridge is not generally run at top potential but viewed as a lower pressure alternative to a 338-06 with similar performane with the 250gr bullets.

I just had a reamer and headspace gauges made for the 375 Hawk/Scovill. If I remember correctly the 358 and 338 Hawk might use the same gauges. The Saabi cartridges interest me.

Is there a recording of the reamer specs (print)listed anywhere? I'd like to compare it to the Whelen and Hawk cartridges.

Get me the dimensions and I'll add it. But can't imagine enough difference to worry about.




The Hawk, Gibbs, Howell all available. Dies for the PDK are at Hornady on file I have a reamer. The 338 Sako is basically the Hawk at 2.65" Other than a cool name the Sabi will fall in the middle of the pack.

Never heard of it, some close variations exist however..

I did neck a 9.3x62 case up to .375 and have been playing with it for about 6 months..It has a bit more powder space than The Hawk or Hawk Scoville. I get and easy 2500 FPS with a 300 gr. Hornady. I can get more but don't figure one needs more than that and the loads are not hot and brass lasts a long time..I also use GSC bullets at 265 gr. at 2600 FPS..all in a 22.5 inch barrel..I only did this wildcat because I had a shot out 9mm mauser barrel and I was going for a 9.3x62 it wouldn't clean up so went to a .375..glad I did..I can push a 375 H&H with it, but I don't..I would bet dollars to donuts on the chronograph that my loads match factory 300 gr. 375 H&Hs however.??

Based on that I think you could crowd a .338 Win or at least a factory loaded .338 with your 9.3x62 necked "down" to .338.

I always thought a 338 case necked up to 9.3 would make a nice big game round..

Ramrod That is a fine piece of work you have here,, it kinda clears up the whole controversy, I myself would go for the Gibbs,, but what the hell do I know!
