I'm interested in building up a 22-243. Can someone tell me how the brass is created?
Any links and pointers would be appreciated too.
I'm debating whether to build from a Rem action or start from scratch. I'd like to keep the project at $1,200 or less.

Kind of depends on which 22-243 you want. I have a 22-243 Middlested, which is 243 brass necked down to 22, with a 30 degree shoulder. A remington short action will work fine for anything using the 243 case. - Dan

I agree with Dan it kind of depends on witch you want or just how fast you want to go and more importantly what bullets you want to use. If you want to use the heavier .224 bullets you'll have to use a tighter twist barrel. You'll probably have to trim the brass after resizeing to .224 also before fireforming in your chamber.

Thanks guys, I'm looking for a loooong range varmint gun. really the top end of the bullet weights I'm after is 60 to 68 gr. Hoping for 4000 + fps. No rapid fire, just the 10% that are "out there".

But what I'm infering from your replies is that the brass for the 22-243 middlested is necked down 243, which is then fireformed to the new shoulder angle. The "other" 22-243 is simply necked down 243 brass.

Hi BB. My 22-243 Middlestead has a 27" Shilen barrel, with a 1-14 twist. Works great for 55 gr bullets at 4000 fps, once I get into the heavier bullets accuracy goes away. This barrel has about 1500 rounds through it so far, and I expect a few more seasons out of it yet. When I do re-barrel though, I will go for a 1-7 or 1-9 twist for this cartridge. FWIW - Dan

I just picked up a .22-243 with a 40 degree shoulder. Mauser action, 25" barrel with a 1-8 twist. I have not had time to get anything done with yet. Any load suggestions?

You are using a 1in8 so might as well use the heavy bullets. I use a 1~8 as well and here are my 2 favorite loads. (these velocities are out of a 30inch tube, so your's will be quite a bit lower)

Taos if you have the 40 deg.shoulder it sounds like the Ack. version. In mine I've been using 43 to 47 gr, H4350 for bullets from 55 - 68 gr. For the 75gr. I'm using 47gr. RL22 for the 75gr Hornady for a velocity of 3700. The 55 gr GS bullet is running 4130 and the 68 gr. Sie.3850 . This is in a 27" Pac-Nor with 8 twist.

Yes, I should have added I have a standard .22-243, but 3700 with 75grn, I am gonna have to try RL22.
