Weird idea that popped into my head...

I was going to build something based on the Tokarev 7.62 x 25 and then wondered, since I have a boatload of .40 S&W...has anyone created a cartridge that shoots .30 cal from a necked-down .40?

Would it be practical? Case capacity of the 40 (before necking) is nearly 20% more than the Tok so it likely would be similar after necking.

Any thoughts, positive or negative?

Just a wild guess here, but you might look into shortening the 30 Herrett. Run the reamer in short and cut down the dies. Never heard of that being done, as I said, just a WAG. I suspect to 10mm case would work better.

Marty, of 458 Socom fame, made a 30 HRT based on the 6.8 spc case run through 30 Herrett dies. The 10mm and the 6.8 were both derived from the 30 Remington. He also made the 338 spectre using a 10mm case necked down to 338 for subsonic use.

Thanks, guys. I've kinda thought it through a bit more and will probably just go for a .30 Carbine. Everything- brass, bullets, dies, magazines...should be easier to find.

There was an article many years ago in one of the gun magazines about a 10mm necked to .22. Maybe Guns Magazine. IIRC it was built on a Colt 1911 Delta Model.

Thanks, Dave. I think there's the .22 PPU which is a .45 ACP necked to .22

Actually, I thought a bit more about this. If the .357 Sig is a .40 necked to take a .358, then another .050 should be possible. Probably better to start with the Sig brass; don't think I'd get there in one pass with the .40.

Than again, maybe just a 7.62 Tokarev...
