Does anybody know if a .338 wildcat has been made on the fine 8x68S case?

Perhaps there even has been made one that has "blown out" some of the taper and made a steeper angeled shoulder?

I'm building a competition/hunting rifle on the Sauer 200 system ... later it would be fun to have a longer, heavier barrel for it in this kind of wildcat for longer range shooting and hunting(seal, goose ...).

(This is a cartridge I've been thinking of for a while, - and it'll still be a while before I'll realize it ...)

Let me know how this turns out. The first time I saw a 8x68 I thought it would be even better as a .338x68.

Don't know anything about its performance, but there's one called the .338 OAM. Apparently some Norwegian named Ole A Malvaer made it up, along with others in a series on the same case.
2.18" body, .499" at shoulder, 40*, about a .343" long neck, 2.62" case.

Thank you very much, bwana-be.
I will check out this wildcat you mentioned. (the "designer" also live in Norway, as I do)
[Big Grin]
I have also been considering the .330 Dakota, it may just be the .338 for me - a very "efficient looking" case, - but the brass is expensive.
- And fredj338, I'll let you know what I find out ... [Wink]

Gentlemen

David Tooley has designed cartridges from the X68 case in 7mm, 30 cal and 338. They are really neat and is very close to the 375 H&H lenght magnums. www.tooleyrifles.com

Johan, I went to the Tooley site but their e-mail is down. Do you have any info on his .338Tooley?

I'm sure they are great rounds, but on Tooley's website, he first says, "The case has the same capacity as a 300 Winchester Magnum," but then says (about the 7mm version) "The 7mm will out-perform a 7STW and use less powder to do it."
This sounds a bit suspect.
The STW is a full-length mag case, and considerably bigger than the 300 Win Mag.
In fact, if the 8x68 holds what the 300 Win Mag does, then it would seem the 7mm would hold about what the Rem Mag does, and it's a far cry from the performance of the STW (value of said perfromance aside.)
All that said, I only wish the 8x68 cases were more available over here.

I think the 330 Dakota is a fine round.
You know you can make them from Jeffery brass, right? Can you get 8x68 cheaper than 404J?

I guess the best way is to give David a call.

Bwana-be
I know of one 7X68 and it has a case volume that is between 7mm wby and 7 STW. The velocity is closer to STW. Look at Jarrets 284 it get almost to STW velocity with a bit less powder. STW is not an uneconomic cartridge if you compare powder charge with velocity.

Tooleys cartridges are pretty blown out to get more room.

I've posted this question on some Norwegian sites/fora and I am starting to get some results concerning the .300 and .338 OAM wildcat.
It seems that Ken Howell has described these cases in his book "Designing and formulating custom cartridges".
Ole A. Molvr got his chamber reamer and die-set made at JGS, - so I guess they also got more info ...
Nice to see that several people have designed cartridges on the x68S case, like David Tooley also ... [Smile] [Smile]
