Rusty.408 Wildcat
IS there a .408 caliber rimless or belted wildcat? Say necking up or down the 375/458 belted case? Or perhaps necking down a 404 Jeffery .423 to .408?

Bwana-beYou talking about the CheyTac caliber? I haven't seen anything. Although the 400 Whelen is only 2thou bigger (right?) and would likely shoot a .408" bullet well enough. Sort of a 400 Whisper of sorts.
There's not exactly a ready supply of bulelts in that caliber, not much reason to go there when you have plenty of 410 and 416 bullets.
I would be interesting to see how well the Rigby case would handle the 408 ULD bullets, decrease the taper and shorten the neck, load it to 60k....
Make a CZ sniper rifle, could be good fun (till someone shoots an eye out - at 1k!)

Grandpasez408 Cheytac, made from necked down 505
Gibbs brass. A third more case capacity than Rigby case. Only thing that would be bigger
would be a 50 cal necked down.Ed.

LongDistanceOperatorIIRC a guy who goes by "Randy in Va" (Virginia) has a .408/.50BMG. He posts at
http://www.varminthunters.com and
http://www.longrangehunting.comThis is from memory. It's been ages since I've gone to those sites. Randy is a super guy though.

asdfOK, I'm curious, why a .408? The only maker of bullets I can think of is Woodleigh, that and some cast bullet makers for some of the Sharps cartridges. It seems to me the .416 Rem should be close enough.

RustyI own a 450/400 3 inch (.408) double rifle.
I am having a 404 Jeffery (.423) made. The 404 Jeffery supposedly is the bolt action equivlant of the 450/400 3 inch.
Woodleigh and Hawk make good .408 caliber bullets.
Just wandering! No real good reason, but then when did that stop us???

KennethIYou might also want to check out Lost River Ballistic for bullets. They have a .408 bullet with a BC of .940 to help out with those long shots. I also faintly remember somebody relating them and the .408 Cheytac development.

Are you saying your shop has built a few of these??
07 September 2005, 09:39
MartytWMy partner shop was part of development of such a cartridge. Then folks involved had a falling out and parted ways. However, yes, I have followed development of a 338-408 from ground up through load work up and group testing at 1000 and 1500 yards. Have seen numerous groups at 1000 yards that were in the 4 to 5" range for 5 shots. Groups were actually shot on FBI silhouettes and were head shots. Shooter and rifle were instrumental to this type of shooting but cartridge is capable of extreme distances.

DougH9I thought that if 408 match bullets become commonly availible (Matchkings), that a good long range round for common actions would be a 408 Wby. (416 necked down). The neck down would be minimal, and ballistics would be awesome for a standard (more or less) action.
